Out of the Cage: When a flight of fun goes awry, a bat shifter plays the damsel in distress.

Sekani just planned to stretch his Egyptian fruit bat’s wings a little while his vampire lover, Master Borscht Kuznetsov, sat through a conference call. Unfortunately, his short flight takes an unexpected turn when he runs into another bat…of the non-shifter variety. Sekani’s headlong rush puts him in unexpected peril. While Sekani can speak telepathically with Borscht, will it be enough for his vampire to find and rescue him?

Leaping, Sekani glided through the air and carefully landed on a section of intertwining vines. He nibbled a berry, easily avoiding the bush’s sharp thorns. Chirruping, he swallowed and licked his lips, cleaning away the tasty, bitter juices.

Yum!

Sekani ate a second, then a third berry. As he reached for a fourth, he placed one wing-claw to his left and stretched his body. The vine must have had a crack or weakness somewhere, for it dipped and gave way.

With a squeak, Sekani found himself tumbling to the ground. He bounced off a couple of vine branches and scraped over a few more. When he finally hit the ground, he rested there as he attempted to regain his senses.

Once he’d caught his breath, Sekani crawled out from under the bush. He peered up at the berries, but no longer had an appetite for them. His head hurt a bit too much, so instead, he thought a nap sounded nice.

Sekani flapped and jumped, then immediately landed about five feet up on the trunk of a tree. He crawled upward, searching for a suitable place to hang. Deciding on a nice area of cover, Sekani reached it, secured his claws, and hung upside down. After stretching his wings, then shaking and ruffling his fur, he wrapped his wings around his body and sighed.

No sooner had Sekani closed his eyes when he heard a screech. He snapped his eyes back open and found himself face to face with…something. It took Sekani a second to realize that it was another bat.

Evidently, he’d decided to nap too close to another bat’s nest…and the beast, while small and brown, was angry. It was larger than Sekani, too. Spreading his wings, Sekani took to the sky.

Unfortunately, so did the other bat. It chased after Sekani as he flapped swiftly, winging between tree branches and around thick trunks. Every time he turned to head back toward the estate house, the little animal drove him in the other direction.

Irritation filling him, Sekani headed toward the ground. While he might end up with a few scratches while shifting to human form, at least once done he could swat at the bat. Sekani figured after the bat left his human form alone, he could shift back and find a place closer to the house to take a nap.

Sekani landed on the ground, and the larger bat immediately thumped into him. Sprawling on the ground, he banged his head against a stone he hadn’t even noticed. Momentarily stunned, Sekani couldn’t react when the other bat scratched and clawed at him.
