Sometimes you need to figure out what you need all by yourself.

Jake Lewis has been out and proud since high school, blessed with supportive and understanding—for the most part—family and friends. He’s even managed to enjoy a few carnal experiences, but it’s never been anything that’s really flipped his switches. He craves a committed relationship like the one he sees his father and Vincent share. Starting his second year of college, Jake finds himself tired of having to keep his serial monogamist leanings on the down-low. He decides it’s time to enjoy school activities other than football. Running across a broad-shouldered, cane-wielding, braid-sporting older black man, he realizes he’s spotted someone who sets his picky libido on fire. He learns the guy’s name is Devon Gateman, and much to his surprise, is the brother of his old coach. Jake had enough experience to recognize the heat filling Devon’s gaze, so he eagerly accepts his invitation to dinner. Unfortunately, when word gets out that Devon is courting Jake, he encounters resistance from an unexpected source. Can the pair rise above objections and discover the kind of relationship Jake has always wanted?

Arriving at the athletics building, Devon reached for the door handle. He pulled the door open and headed inside. The tip of his cane tapped on the linoleum floor, sounding loud in the hallway.

Just as Devon reached the door he needed, it opened in front of him. A young man froze, staring up at him. His jaw sagged open for just an instant before he caught himself and snapped his mouth closed.

Devon noticed the gleam of appreciation in the young Caucasian male’s deep green eyes as he took a step backward. Continuing to hold the door, he smiled up at him. “Coming in, sir?”

“Yes, thank you.”

Moving forward, Devon gave the young man’s form a quick sweep.

Lean and built, perhaps five-foot-nine or ten, dirty blond hair cut short, and vibrant green eyes.

For the first time in a long time, Devon’s dick twitched behind the fly of his dress slacks. Well, hell. How unlucky was it that some cute college kid who couldn’t have even reached his twenty-first birthday finally caught the attraction of his libido.

Still, Devon hadn’t missed the way the cute guy had discreetly checked him out, too.

Devon’s gaydar pinged in the back of his mind.

Christ on a cracker, isn’t he a damn tempting morsel?

Just because he couldn’t resist, as soon as Devon stepped through the door, he dropped his cane.

“Let me get that for you, sir.”

The young male immediately bent to retrieve the object. His jeans stretched oh-so-nicely across his backside. Devon’s fingers actually twitched with his desire to reach out and caress, grasp, and squeeze those firm globes. He just knew they’d be glorious.

When the young man stood and held out his cane, Devon didn’t bother hiding his appreciation. He was too old for games, and it wasn’t like the young stud could take him, injured or not. Smirking, he reached out and gripped the cane, making certain two of his fingers wrapped around where the stranger gripped the stick.

“Thank you…” Devon allowed his words to trail off with a slight question at the end, interested to see how he’d respond. It’d be very telling.

“Jake, sir,” the Caucasian, Jake, replied, a slight hitch in his voice. “Jake Lewis.”

Devon curved his lips into a wide smile as he slid his forefingers over Jake’s in a gentle caress where they both gripped the cane. “Thank you, Jake,” he replied, allowing his voice to deepen a little with his interest.

Before Devon could say more, he heard his old coach, Ronald Silverman, call out to him. “Hey, Devon. I thought I heard your voice.”

Turning just his head to peer at Coach Silverman, Devon nodded. “You did, indeed.” He refocused on Jake, giving the handsome young male a smile. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Jake Lewis.” As he spoke, he eased his fingers off of Jake’s, releasing the man and taking his cane.

“L-Likewise,” Jake whispered, a pink hue darkening his cheeks.

Devon rested the end of the cane on the floor and carefully pivoted, making certain he didn’t twist his knee. He strolled away from Jake, all the while wondering if the man watched him. Unwilling to check, he focused on crossing the space to reach Coach Silverman’s office.

Ignoring the coach’s twitching lips, the tell revealing the man fought back a laugh, Devon paused before him. “Hi, Coach Silverman. I’d ask how you’ve been, but I already know.” He smiled at the aging man. “You want to do this in your office or in the workout room?”

Coach Silverman sighed. “My office.” The man turned and headed into the small, cluttered room. “You’re not going to leave me in traction again, are you?”

Devon barked a laugh. “I’ve never left you in traction.” He closed the door behind him. Only then did he take a second to look through the small, vertical window in the door.

Jake was gone.

“You trolling on college campus now?”

Returning his focus to Coach Silverman, Devon headed to the man’s desk. “Hadn’t planned on it,” he replied truthfully, setting his briefcase and his cane on the coach’s desk. He turned and motioned for Silverman to turn around. “Still, that white boy is hot.” His coach automatically crossed his arms in front of him as Devon moved up behind him. He immediately began feeling up his old coach’s spine. “Is Jake out?”
