In a world where possessing cyber technology is deadly, three close friends, Simone, Dylan, and Franny, dare to defy the rules—by exploring forbidden tech.

In a post-cyber world where cyber technology is forbidden, a close-knit group of rebels leads a double life—posing as ordinary citizens while running a clandestine sanctuary for all things digital.

A new member disrupts their delicate balance. Kassa Andenet, a brilliant Ethiopian scientist and robotics engineer, could either be their most valuable ally or their worst mistake.

Simone lowered herself onto the chilly stone floor, crossing her legs and settling into her spot in the circle. Claire had already conjured several orbs that floated near the ceiling, casting a soft glow on their gathering.

Dylan stood and stepped forward, his movements calm and composed. “You’ve all met our newest addition, and I’m sure you’re curious about my connection to Kassa. Why don’t you take it from here and tell them a bit about yourself?” he said, directing his gaze towards Kassa.

Simone couldn’t help but feel intrigued. She wasn’t the only one. Curiosity hung thick in the air. She, Dylan, and Franny had always been close-knit, sharing their secrets and protecting one another. Not once had Dylan mentioned this man before now. And considering the group’s pact to avoid serious relationships and new friendships, Simone wondered if Dylan had explained the rules to Kassa…

Kassa moved to the center of the circle, his words flowing with confidence as he spun slowly as if to assess each person individually. “I’m sure all of you know my name by now. I’m thirty-six, single, with no steady partner,” he began, his words articulate and his tone self-assured. “My parents are from Ethiopia. They immigrated to the USA before I was born. They became American citizens, and I grew up in San Francisco.”

John Livingston, the group’s network specialist, interrupted with skepticism. “And what do you do for a living?”

“I graduated early from high school at age fifteen with a hefty scholarship,” Kassa replied without missing a beat. “And I apprenticed with the government’s science and engineering research laboratories. I’m currently the head scientist of the robotics division at Snowflake Research and Cybernetics Engineering Labs just outside the city.”

“What the fuck? A government guy here? Dylan, what were you thinking?” Simone snapped angrily. The protectiveness she felt for their group surged within her. “And we all agreed long ago not to bring anyone new into our fold after Claire!”

Others rose from the floor, joining in the outburst of accusations hurled at Dylan. It was only when Kassa raised his voice that the chaos subsided.

“Please, everyone, calm down,” Kassa said, his tone commanding attention. “I may work for the government, but I’m not here to spy on you or turn you in.”

“And why should we believe you? And why exactly are you here then?” Franny shouted.

“Yeah, since you’ve already got a cushy job working with top-of-the-line cyber equipment, including possessing a mobile phone,” Danny grumbled with agitation and skepticism, pointing at the phone in Kassa’s shirt pocket.

Kassa held up his hands. “Yes, I do have a mobile phone. I have to have one for my position at Snowflake. Please, sit down and listen.” He waited until they became quiet before continuing.

Simone had to admire him for keeping his cool.
