She dipped a cloth into the bowl of water on the table next to his chair and gently dabbed Titus’s forehead.

“Tyra?”

“Yes, my love. I’m here.”

“So tired…pain…sleep, I want to sleep…”

She quickly fetched some bone broth from the pot that hung over the fire. Carefully, she tried to ladle a little of it between Titus’s lips, but he didn’t swallow, and it dribbled from his lips onto his beard. She cleansed it, then adjusted his IV. He should have been in the hospital, but after he’d recovered from the terrible accident and his surgery, and they had fallen in love, he had made her promise never to send him there ever again. Not that he’d been treated badly. He simply abhorred hospitals.

Since she was a nurse, the doctor had given in to her nursing him at home. At least the IV provided him with the necessary fluids because he hadn’t been drinking or eating for the last few weeks. The doctor told her she was just postponing the inevitable by hooking him up to IV, but she wanted…needed to keep him with her as long as she could. Was she being selfish?

Seventy years…and she wasn’t ready for it to end.

They had been wonderful years filled with happiness and love. The only thing that saddened them often was that they never had a child. The gynecologist claimed that maybe they weren’t compatible since he was from a different world, an alien species with a totally different blood type.

But he looked no different than the men on Rezunia. Not externally.

“Tyra…what day is it?”

“It is almost Christmas, my love. In a few minutes.”
