Ash and Grey have settled into their new lives as cave dwellers in the most coveted safe house. They have formed an amiable union with the high vampire Drake, the werewolf Ax, and Orla the fairy.
Things, however are not as perfect as they seem. Ash’s blood has made her oddly human-like and speculation about the values of it abound. One attempt has already been made on her life and others are plotting against her.
When Drake lies to the High Five to try and protect her, his indiscretion backfires in his face.
His lie brings the High Five to their caves and two male bodyguards are sent to protect Ash.
The two new additions are sexy as hell, but Alder and Blue have desires of their own. They are tired of working for the High Five, and want to look after Ash’s body outside of what their position mandates.
The movie was far more interesting than Ash had thought it would be. Unfortunately she was distracted, because Drake was leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, and Ax was sprawled out on her opposite side, with his feet up on the back of the seat in front of him.
Grey, however, was sitting in front of her, with his arm draped over Orla’s shoulder, and she felt kind of left out. She was the center of attention, yet the man who truly held her heart was holding onto the tiny fairy and not her.
She had no reason to be jealous. All three men loved her, and she felt the same way about them. Was she honestly selfish enough to deny Grey the time he spent with Orla? It was only fair. He never interfered with her and Drake or Ax. He’d even gone as far as to spend the occasional night in Orla’s rooms so Ash could sleep with the other two men.
Orla was adorable, and she loved to either watch others having sex, or be watched during sex. They had a perfectly symbiotic relationship where everyone was willing to give and share. Maybe the problem at the moment, Ash considered, was simply that no one was paying any attention to her.
Why did she need to leave it up to the men? She didn’t. All she had to do was reach out and get either man’s attention and they would touch her as she wanted.
Grey touched her mind with his own. What’s wrong? I can feel tension radiating off you like a cold wave.
I’m sitting here sulking, which is seriously self-indulgent and stupid.
What are you sulking about?
You have your arm lovingly around Orla and I’m being ignored for the movie.
Grey chuckled in her thoughts. I’m sure you can make them pay attention if you put your mind to it. What are we doing after the movie?
I don’t know. It hasn’t really been discussed, but I know Drake has that conference call with the other high vampires later. He said it could take a couple hours. What are you doing?
Orla and I were going dancing. Wanna come?
Ax didn’t like to dance and if she went, she would be the odd woman out. No. You know how Ax feels. He says the loud music and pounding feet hurt his sensitive ears.
I forgot. Why don’t you and Ax find something to do alone? It’s rare that Drake leaves you two to yourselves.
He was right. Drake was extremely over-protective, so that he spent more time watching over her than doing his actual job. Hopefully he wasn’t in for a reprimand from the High Five. Of course, he was the top of the High Five in this particular dwelling, but overall he was number eleven in seniority.
Christen was the absolute number one, the oldest and the most powerful vampire there was. He was also a stuffed shirt, somewhat cranky and cynical old man. Gretchen, his second in command, wasn’t much better, but she did have an understanding streak that bordered on an ability to find things humorous. As far as she knew, Christen didn’t even have that.
Ax shifted toward her, grabbed the back of her hair and forced her head down onto his shoulder. He kissed the top of her head and whispered, “If Drake’s going to be so fucking distant, I’ll take advantage of it and cuddle you.”
Ax usually allowed Drake to be dominant, even though he was in no way submissive. From what she had seen, Ax only bowed his head to Drake and no one else, not even the remaining four of the board. It made her feel warm and cozy inside to have Ax’s fingers in her hair, the side of his head resting on hers. Her feelings of loneliness winked out in a single second.
“So what are we doing after the movie?”
Drake leaned toward them. “You’re going back to your rooms and staying there. I don’t want you wandering around without me.”
“I’m quite capable of taking care of her,” retorted Ax. “You’re not the only one who can protect her. My pack is having a party for my sister and I wanted to take Ash.”
Drake grunted. “We’ll discuss it after the movie.”
It was kind of rude to the dwellers who were sitting around them to be talking.
“Yeah, we will,” replied Ax in a snarky tone.
Ash had a feeling Ax planned to fight Drake on this one. If they had nothing else in common, it was a no-nonsense commanding nature. Both men could protect her, but in reality, Drake was more dangerous. Not that she would ever admit that to Grey or Ax. Drake was an old vampire, and simply had more physical power and knowledge than the other two men.
It had been over a year since six of the vampires attacked her and Grey as they were walking back from the central area. Their goal had been to take her blood. They had only succeeded in losing their lives, because Drake felt her terror and came running, beheading four of them. Grey had killed one and she had taken out the other.
“Hell no. Did you see that?” asked Ax.
She was supposed to be watching the movie, wasn’t she? “No, sorry. What happened?”
He went back to watching and she did the same. She needed to stop her mind from thinking and relax.
