Sometimes, the heaviest expectations are the ones we put on ourselves.

Galen is a future alpha, and even though he’s supposed to obey his father’s orders, sometimes, he disagrees with them. He definitely disagrees with having two human guards protecting him and the rest of their family.

Saul doesn’t want any trouble, but he knows that’s what he has on his hands as soon as he meets Galen. The alpha’s son isn’t happy with his presence with the skulk, and he’s not afraid of being vocal about it, especially when his father orders Saul to keep an eye on him.

When Galen accepts a truce with Saul, he doesn’t expect to start liking the man, let alone fall in love with him. The problem is that, as the heir to the alpha position, Galen needs to marry a fox shifter woman, and Saul is definitely not that.

Can they find a way to be together, or will they lose each other before they can even give their relationship a try?

Council meetings were boring. Galen had been in on countless of them, and they never got any better. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t have a choice. He was his father’s heir, and he was supposed to learn how to be an alpha.

Apparently, being an alpha meant sitting in boring meetings and dealing with idiots. Galen couldn’t say he was looking forward to it. Some days, he wasn’t even sure he wanted to take his father’s place, but he was the firstborn, which meant he’d be the alpha.

He stared at the woman droning on the screen. She was saying something about tightening security in various territories of the forest, which Galen thought was a given. A maniac had escaped and wanted all council members and alphas killed. Who wouldn’t tighten security?

“Since we’ve had an influx of human guards, it would be a good idea for every alpha to welcome a few in their territory,” the woman said.

Galen couldn’t help himself—he scoffed.

His father’s gaze snapped to him instantly. Galen knew it had been a mistake, but he hadn’t been able to stop himself. He kept his focus on Karen, hoping his father wouldn’t say anything about his behavior.

“Do you have something to say, Galen?” Karen asked.

Fuck. She’d heard him, too. Of course she had—that was just Galen’s luck.

He cleared his throat and plastered a smile on his face. “No, thank you.”

“Are you sure? I thought I heard you say something.”

Galen still didn’t look at his father. He was pretty sure his dad would have something to say when this was over, so he might as well earn himself the disappointment. “Well, they’re human. What use could they be to us?”

Karen—Galen was pretty sure that was her name, but he couldn’t remember which council member she was for the life of him—arched a brow. “Do you really think humans are incapable of defending us?”

“They’re the ones who put us in this forest in the first place.”

“That has nothing to do with the problem at hand. Humans might not be able to shift into animals, but it doesn’t make them weak. We need all the help we can get. Furthermore, this is the first step to being allowed out of the forest. It won’t happen overnight, but we have to show the humans that we can work with them.”

Galen wasn’t sure if Karen truly believed they’d be allowed outside of the forest. They’d been locked in because humans were afraid of them. Had that changed? It didn’t matter how many times they showed humans they could work with them. Most of the country wouldn’t believe it. They saw shifters as animals. It didn’t matter to them that some humans were monsters, while most shifters just wanted to live their lives in peace. They didn’t understand shifters and were afraid of them, and that was that.
