She is the light, he is the dark, and together they face shadow.

Alone in the world, Vanora finds peace among nature, but when a man comes seeking help and asks her to join forces with a soul unlike any other, she finds herself faced with a confrontation she never expected and a challenge she stands to lose.

Uncontested in his domain, the Lord of Darkness is unexpectedly faced with circumstances providing the opportunity to meet his greatest opposition and form an alliance, both from sources he’s long desired to meet.

When destruction takes its toll, sometimes light needs the dark upon which to reveal the source. She is the light, he is the dark, and together they face shadow.

Vanora flinched at the two battle scars, the deeper, curved mark on his right cheek more prominent than the long, straight one on his left. The depth of his obsidian eyes contained wisdom and intelligence his appearance of twenty-six years failed to justify. His piercing gaze danced tremors along her spine. Sandalwood and cedar wafted across the area.

Disturbed by him in either form, she lowered her gaze to his shoulders and continued her captor’s assessment. A supple indigo blue linen pirate-style shirt hung loose over his shoulders and chest but hugged his waist as the sleeves billowed in the wind. Black soft leather boots laced up the front with a fold down flap near his knees. Tight, midnight blue brushed leather pants left little to the imagination of her traveling gaze.

Ah, femininity rears its head. Douglass proffered a wry smile. “Nothing to keep you warm, but a robe, huh?” He crouched down no more than arm’s length from her and locked her gaze. “Shall we talk of your fate, my lady?”

Their whimper devoured by the sudden breeze as the wolves huddled near her, Vanora locked his gaze. “Are you ready to speak of yours, my lord?”

“Aside from your life—” Interrupted by a lupine growl, he leveled his gaze on the bold animal. “I wish to discuss the things you were told at the castle.” Tempted to growl back, he clenched his jaw at her shiver. To avoid any error, he tapped her mind more thoroughly.

“Why didn’t you come listen for yourself?”

“You know as well as I polite society does not welcome my presence.” Silent for a moment, Douglass summoned a steaming mug to his hand. “Hence I seldom get involved in their petty doings.” He offered her the cup and swung his head toward the growling wolf, which snapped at his hand. The liquid in the mug never moved. “I offer kindness and they offer teeth.” A deep-throated growl escaped him, and the wolf cowered with a soft whimper.

“They fear for my life like their own.” Vanora accepted the mug in one hand and stroked the animal with her other. “Easy, my friend.”

He watched her touch soothe the poor creature. “They’ve nothing to fear from me.” His gaze deliberately as calculative and measured as a predator’s, he purred, “But you might.”
