Only the worthy are rewarded with happily-ever-after.
The Always Cambridge Series chronicles the life of Holly Cambridge through her tumultuous childhood, violent teen years into adulthood, and the consequences that stem from being the daughter of mob boss Bill Cambridge.
In this final emotional installment of the Always Cambridge Saga Series, Holly Cambridge lives a quiet unassuming life as Beth Gregory in Witness Protection.
While drowning in heartrending grief, Holly struggles to move on with her life. Her nights are filled with nightmares of ghosts and regret. Her days seem unending, grey and lifeless. She plods through for only one reason. One very important one.
But one surprise meeting brings a ray of light into her darkness, in the form of Victor Mayhue, the love she'd been forced to leave behind.
However, with that glimmer of hope, Victor forces Holly to face the demons of her past. She is compelled to confess her sins and reveal the secrets she and Randy had squandered a lifetime to hide. And she must suffer the harshest judgment of all, from the one person whose esteem and respect mean more to her than life itself.
Will the Mayhues finally destroy the existence Holly has always dreamed of by taking away the one thing she's fought her entire life to achieve? Or in the end, will Victor ultimately realize the role he was always meant to fulfill?
I could feel someone watching us. I felt the cold tingle on the back of my neck. It's why I'd sent Maura inside to find Rick. Something was off. Perhaps I was just being paranoid. Ever since Randy'd left, things had been off for me. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to protect Maura all by myself. But I wasn't about to ignore my initial instinct. My inner warning system that Randy himself had first pointed out to me had kicked into overdrive. He told me never to ignore it. Better to be overly cautious than to disregard it, only to regret it later. I couldn't risk Maura.
James, my last remaining bodyguard, was further out, watching from the outskirts of the institution. If there was trouble, he was too far away to help us. Damn it, I should have had him come in with us or hired extra people. But I hated to bring in outsiders.
Perhaps, it was just Rick. Maybe he'd spotted us from the building and it was him watching us that had spooked me. But it didn't feel like it was coming from the building. It was definitely behind me.
As soon as Maur entered the building I felt safe enough to turn my back and face whatever was there. I started at the far left. I tried to take in the big picture first, then pick out the details, faces, and abnormalities on the reverse.
Trees, professors, students, man in dark suit alone, trees, shadows building. Building, shadows, trees, solitary man in dark suit…dark man, hands in pockets, familiar, stance, suit, dark, incredibly tailored designer suit. Posture. Easy-going air. Cockiness.
The pain in my chest almost brought me to my knees. Dark hair. Tanned skin. Perfect chin. Mouth. That mouth I knew could slant into the devil's own grin. The boyish dimples that would sprout when he did. The perfect straight white teeth. The eyes. Those chocolate brown eyes. Stared back at me. Watching. Waiting. My chest felt tight. My vision tunnelled.
