After SaBástienne’s death, Keallach immersed herself in scriptures, determined to, as she put it, bathe her boys in light from the start. She frequented the chapel, either praying for hours, reading the sacred writings, or singing heart-wrenching hymns to her unborn sons.
She also demanded to know every detail that Alesdair could remember from the past. And if in his retelling they had turned right, in this reality, they went left. She was determined to make everything different.
One day, as they walked in the bailey for her afternoon exercise, she tried to engage the ill-tempered Joel in conversation.
“So, how are Mishel and Derrick these days?”
“How would I know? They are hundreds of years in the future. By now Derrick has most likely seduced the pants off him, and neither of them miss me at all.”
“Why didn’t ya bring him here with ya then?”
“Time-travel fucks with the human mind.”
“Right. I can attest ta tha’. But ya needn’t fret over Mishel fallin’ for Derrick harder than you. Wha’ he has for you is obvious.”
“But his time is limited, and I am missin’ out on bein’ with him. And regardless of wha’ you humans think, we do have feelin’s.”
“Oh, we humans, don’t think tha’ of all Nephilim, Joel. Just you,” she teased
When he gave her a dirty look she winked at him. “Would ya like ta see him?”
Joel gave her a stern stare. “I will no’ abandon my mission, for any reason. Even love.”
“I’m no’ askin’ ya to. I need Mishel’s expertise and perhaps the loan of a medical book or two. What if ya sent Derrick ta watch over us for a bit in your stead? You and Mish have some time together, and you could either bring me the information tha’ I need in tha’ stunning brain of yours, or if ’tis possible, bring me the text I require. If it is allowed. I’m na certain if ya are permitted ta bring tha’ kind o’ modern thinkin’ and technology here.”
His handsome features perked up. “Can be tricky. What do ya need?”
“Don’t you already know?” She grinned
He sifted through her mind. “Got it,” Joel said, just as Derrick appeared.
