Kiri Learn and her adopted son Ryo escape their Hienial captors only to learn the Mother Goddess has plans for them.
Drace Vanier, a Lioni Alpha and Fury, a Beariti shifter of the Great Black Bear Clan, know that Kiri is their mate. What they didn't know was what the Mother Goddess had planned for her.
When Kiri reveals her special gift, and uses it to help their enemy, both men must come to terms with it. For only with their help, can Kiri survive the demands of her gift.
Kiri eyed the medical doctor warily. Though the blonde woman looked friendly and appeared to truly want to heal not only her body, but also her mind, Kiri just didn’t know what to think, what to do. She couldn’t deny that getting the memories of her time with the Hienials out of her mind would be a blessed thing. How could just talking about what happened, reliving it again to another person, help her? It just didn’t make sense.
"Kiri, there is nothing to fear from me. My name is Brandy Vanier. I’m Drace’s adopted sister. I’d do nothing to harm my brother’s mate, my new sister." When the doctor reached out and took her hand, a soothing balm of warmth spread throughout her body. Kiri shuddered as the heaviness that she’d lived with these past five years lightened, just a bit.
"How? How are you doing what you’re doing?"
"It is my gift. A gift my family has encouraged me to use to help others. I’m an orphan really, brought as a child from a planet many, many light years away. When the Vanier Alpha found me homeless and starving, he took me in. His people have given me the world. Helping others is the least I can do."
"So, what do I need to do? Do I tell you all about the last five years I’ve lived as a repository for the Hienial seed?" Kiri’s body shook so badly, she knew she was about to fall apart. She straightened her spine, intent on showing no weakness.
"Why don’t you sit on the cot over there?" Brandy pointed toward a low cot covered with a homey looking quilt and several fluffy pillows, "While I lower the lights and light a few scented candles."
"What? Why? Don’t I just tell you what happened and you’ll allow me to leave?" Kiri twisted her hands together, her stomach churning. Regardless of how strange it may seem to lie on a couch, in the near dark, smelling flowers, if there was any chance it may help her, she’d do it.
"There is no reason you can’t be comfortable when the telling is not. Is there, Kiri?"
Kiri shook her head, making her way to the low couch. The intricate design of the quilt drew her attention. It was almost as if the swirls and other designs moved as she touched it, drawing her fear and pain away from her. The feeling intensified as she lowered herself to lie down on the quilt.
"No, Kiri." The healer hurried to her side. "You must be beneath the quilt for it to truly help you." She helped Kiri to stand then pulled the covering aside to wait until Kiri lowered herself to the cot again.
The quilt covered Kiri with warmth and…love. She was surrounded by it. The sensation of being held in her mother’s arms coiled around her through her. Her heart warmed, her mind settled and her pain receded to a place where it could no longer touch her, hurt her—a place where she could pull it out, look at it and finally banish it from her heart.
The healer sat on a low stool near her, her hand resting on the quilt. "Do you think you can talk about it now?"
Kiri nodded and sifted through her memories. "Where should I start?"
