Can Jay keep control of his own mind or will he let the powers that be take over and cost him the person he loves more than anything?
Jay and Kyle have been mated a week. A happy, love and lust filled week but now everything is starting to fall apart. Nightmares plague him. Are his dreams just fiction or his destiny, is he becoming what he was always meant to be? With no time to figure it out, Jay and Kyle have to find and rescue kidnapped shifters and navigate their way through alpha politics, all while doing damage control for Jay's newfound uncle. He has to face his abusive step-father, survive attacks by hunters and keep his sanity while fighting to prevent his nightmares from becoming reality.
He had to keep moving, protect his mate.
Winter-dried leaves and branches crunched underfoot, his back legs burning with adrenaline and his lungs strained with urgent fear. If the hunters caught him, he couldn't protect his mate.
Must protect mate. Must run!
Claws digging into the frozen ground, he gave one last push before leaping into the air and was flying toward freedom.
BANG! Scalding pain shot through his shoulder.
BANG! His breath escaped him in a painful rush as his chest felt as if it was caving in from the bullets. But he couldn't stop.
His thick rust coloured fur was now blotched with dark red, the blood spreading like a damning sentence. But if he fell, it would cost him everything: his mate, his pack and there would be nothing left to live for.
He couldn't. Must protect mate.
He couldn't let himself be caught nor run to his pack or mate for shelter. If he led the hunters to his mate, there would be nothing left for him. He couldn't cause his mate's death, he could survive anything but that.
One last yowl and he left everything behind. The hunters would follow. They always did. He ran faster and pushed, knowing he couldn't spare any time to rest. He blocked everything out and focussed on leading the hunters away from his mate. He couldn't feel his mate as the bond grew thinner and thinner until the darkness drowned it. The bond was silenced. There was nothing. Nothing but darkness. And pain.
"Jay! Wake up! It's just a dream, you're safe. I promise. I won't let anyone hurt you again." His mate's voice drifted faintly to him, but it didn't break through the fog.
Jay had the same dream, every night since his birthday. Four days, four nights of fear. The exact same sequence of events. The same fears and pain. Everything the same until now. Before, he'd just gotten images or feelings but this was the whole surround sound, 4D experience.
Scrambling to his feet, he panted and looked around in case the dream had come to life. Jay had to get away, get the dirt and terror off his skin, now.
