Brett is a government scientist on the run because the people he works for want to use his research about realms and other worlds for their own gain. He escapes with the help of his uncle, only to find a man falling from the sky in a ball of flame and feathers after being shot down by the very people he himself is running from.

Iron is a warrior guardian to the rightful king of Angelum, but was forced to flee his home realm with his king after a coup for the throne. There is a bounty on his head and the last thing he needs is to be almost captured by the human military that want to cage and experiment on him.

Iron cannot resist the tempting human that saves him and, when they give in to the heat between them, they accidentally trigger the irrevocable mate bond. Both of them are running from something, but they may just discover that each of them is exactly what the other needs.

Iron stretched his gray wings wide and dived as another barrage of bullets came at him from the humans below. A couple clipped the edges of his wings, tearing off a few lesser feathers, and spurred him on to move faster despite being exhausted.

This group had been chasing him for an hour now, but Iron had already been in the sky for a few hours before that on his way back from a recon mission. He was an Angelus warrior, but even he could not keep up this pace indefinitely.

The first few miles of the chase, he’d been able to dodge and hide from the humans’ helicopter until the machine had to turn back. Now they simply resorted to firing streams of bullets at him from the ground whenever they thought they spotted a glimpse of him through the uneven cloud cover.

“Go home, humans!”

Iron knew they couldn’t hear him, but he didn’t know how much longer he could endure the strain of flight. His back and wing muscles ached and spasmed independently with fatigue. He just needed to reach the mountains—he could lose them quickly there and circle back to the nest.

Unfortunately, they must have figured that out, too. The moment the mountains came into view the amount of bullets doubled, coming at him with more frequency. They must have more of those weapons than he’d first assumed thought.

Iron dipped as fast as he could, but he couldn’t avoid that many bullets and several of the blasted things ripped through one of his wings. Stretching the broken limb, he tried to keep it steady enough to glide with. “Come on. Just one more minute,” he pleaded with whatever powers that be who might be listening.

He only needed sixty seconds longer and he’d be far enough up the mountain to go on by foot. By then he’d have enough of a lead to rest and recover on a cliff overhang and leave before the humans caught up to him.

The barrage of bullets stopped but Iron was too experienced in battle to think the humans were retreating. Sure enough, after a moment of tense silence, Iron could hear a strange whirring sound in the air.

By the time he worked out it was some kind of rocket-propelled explosive device, it was too late for him to do anything more than brace himself.

The next thing he knew his whole body erupted in flame and agony and he was plummeting to the earth. No matter how hard he tried to right his wings and catch an air current, the limbs wouldn’t obey. He became desperate as he tumbled and spun out of control as he thought about his king and friends that needed him. They depended on him to keep them safe.

Mercifully, everything went black before he even hit the ground.
