Forbidden love is hard enough—until murder makes it deadly.

In Merryvale, Idaho, vampires and werewolves share the same schools and streets, but old grudges run deep. For seventeen-year-old Joni, a vampire, and her girlfriend Jean, a werewolf, prejudice shadows every step of their relationship. Some can’t stand that they’re same-sex, others hate that they’re interspecies—and plenty despise them for both.

When a vampire drifter is murdered and Jean becomes the prime suspect, the fragile peace of Merryvale begins to crack. Jean flees with Max, a fellow outcast werewolf, leaving Joni reeling and desperate to follow. Her search leads to Boise, where betrayal and unexpected truths unravel—but danger closes in faster than answers.

Captured by a violent white supremacist group, Joni and Jean must fight side by side to survive. But even if they escape, the supremacists aren’t finished. They’re bringing their hate back to Merryvale—and the final showdown could consume the whole town.

The day had started like any other, with me gradually getting dressed while cramming my textbooks into my backpack. Another school day, another day of learning and being bored out of my skull.

Whatever, my routine was set. After I had a quick breakfast, I knew that Jean would meet me outside my house. As usual, I’d stand on the porch, surveying the area. The streets would be empty, the time would be eight-fifteen in the morning, and the summer air would smell sweet. Country life was the best, or so people said.

To that, I’d say, Your mileage may vary, because it all depended on whether people could actually live in the country and enjoy it. Me? I’d been born there, and I’d lived there from toddlerhood until now, just past my seventeenth birthday. I enjoyed the solitude. I didn’t know too much about city people, but I knew that I could never live in a big city. It would take me too long to adapt.

In my book, adapting wasn’t an option. It wasn’t what I was all about. Not really, even though I kept the idea of one day moving away in search of a higher education, maybe to another small town, and…

“Joni, are you ready for today?” My bedroom was small, old, and sort of messy with clothes on the floor and notebooks for school. I had a disaster of a desk that had my computer, some books, and a collection of colored pencils. But it was my refuge, my queendom, and it suited me just fine.

While I threw on some clothes—jeans and a red t-shirt, as I liked that color—and stuffed my backpack with my texts for the day, my mother’s voice interrupted me for the second time, plus the question. “Joni, are you on this planet?”

“Yes, Mom, just making sure I have all my books and stuff.” I made a final check on the contents of my bag. All there.

“Joni Anna Matthews!”

Oh, wonderful, my mother only used my full name when she was pissed about something. In this case, it was my not paying attention. I ran downstairs, jumping off the last three stairs to the floor and landing gracefully in an I’m-here kind of gesture. “Ready for school, Mom.”

My mother, tall and slender and blonde, with a narrow face and kind green eyes, nodded and gave me a hug before sending me out the door. “I guess Jean’s waiting.”

“I guess she is.”

Jean and I lived next door to each other, with our mothers often talking about how messed up our lives were and what would people say and on and on, yada infinitum.

Oh, sure, they talked about other things. The weather. The rotten state of politics. The ignorance of people in general. Music, art, and movies. That was no big deal.

What was a big deal was me—that is, me and Jean. My mom and Jean’s mom were friends, but deep down, they wondered what kind of trouble we’d get into and what kind of life we’d have together. Small talk was one thing, but after that, I knew what subject my mom was going to bring up, and if she didn’t mention it first, then Jean’s mom would.

The L word. Lesbian. Women into women. Sex…were we having any? Answer, no, but try telling her that. My mom was convinced that Jean and I were doing the sheet dance, AKA the lesbian lambada. There were a lot of other names for it. But truth be told, Jean and I had discussed the matter, and she’d said that she wasn’t ready. And, again, being totally honest, neither was I.
