The idea was simple, really. Buy a building, use people’s natural curiosity, and create the hottest night club in the city. It took Gage Sinclair and his business partner, Ben Drake, two years to get the place from concept drawings and business proposals to fruition. The two stood outside, laughing and whooping it up as they gazed at the bright neon sign that blazed out the nightspot’s name, Voyeur.
It was opening night. The buzz they had started six months prior had reached a fever pitch and the line to get in was wrapped around the corner. Men dressed in their finest and women in their skimpiest waited patiently for the two large security guards to check their id’s before letting them in.
“This is by far bigger than I ever expected,” Ben said putting his arm over Gage’s shoulders.
Gage grinned smugly. “Didn’t I tell you never doubt me, Benny? How long have we known each other?”
“Since we were five, so thirty years.”
“Thirty years. And still you doubt me when I tell you something is going to blow the fuck up.”
“In my defense, your failures have far outweighed your successes.”
Gage gasped and grabbed his at his chest. “Ouch, that hurts.”
Ben rolled his eyes and walked slowly toward the entrance. “I’m sure you’ll get over it. Come on, let’s get back in there and enjoy all our hard work.”
Passing the muscular men at the door, Gage and Ben smiled as they made their way inside. The interior was dim save for the different sized monitors attached to adjustable poles hanging from the ceiling. Each screen showed a different live feed, and that was just how Gage and Ben had envisioned Voyeur from the beginning.
They passed the immense stage at one end of the room on their way to one of the few private rooms.
“I told you, folks will pay to watch other people get off. Why the fuck do you think the porn industry is so lucrative?” Gage crowed as they stepped into the room. He closed the dark velvet curtain as Ben sat and popped the cork on a bottle of champagne.
“How many times are you gonna rub it in? I see how many people are in here and how many are just waiting to get in. You were right and I was wrong–-for once. Now, sit your ass down and we’ll toast our success.”
Giving Ben a curt nod, Gage sat beside him and took the flute of champagne he held out. “To Voyeur,” he said as he raised it.
“To Voyeur,” Ben echoed as they clinked their glasses together.
They sipped and Gage leaned closer to the large monitor in front of them. He eyed the different feeds and picked one they would observe for the moment. A young woman reclined on an emerald green sofa, champagne in hand as she grinned wickedly for the camera mounted on the ceiling. Raising her glass, she inclined her head and imbibed the bubbly as the curtain behind her was opened and a man stared at her ravenously.
“What do ya think? Are they gonna fuck right there or just put on a show?” Gage raised an eyebrow.
Ben leaned forward to scrutinize what he saw on the screen. “Well, judging by the way he looks, I’d say we’re in for nothing but a show.”
Gage smirked. “And pray tell, why do you think that?”
Ben downed his drink. “He’s got to be wearing a five thousand dollar suit. Anyone who can afford that isn’t likely to do something that could get them arrested or in this case, possibly blackmailed.”
“Now, why would you entertain the notion that someone might expect to be blackmailed for something they do in our establishment?”
Ben shrugged. “Cameras everywhere? Some people, maybe not a hell of a lot, might jump to the conclusion that we’re keeping recordings of what goes on in here.”
Gage nodded. “Yes, but little do they know, the only recordings kept are of the main room, not the private ones.” He winked, filled his half-empty glass and continued, “I think he’s gonna take advantage of the fact that no one knows him and he can pretty much get away with whatever he wants.”
“Within reason, of course.”
“Of course.” Gage watched as the man on the screen closed the curtain and advanced on the woman, knocking the champagne from her hand as he grabbed and lifted her into his arms, kissing her voraciously. “And the show begins.”
Ben smiled. “Yes, the show begins.”
