For Joel, a trip through a portal results in a gender switch, a new life on Earth Fourteen, a new girlfriend, and a promising future…until an old enemy resurfaces. After that, all bets are off.

Kathy, formerly of our Earth, formerly Joel, who switched bodies with the real Kathy during a trip through an experimental portal, is now living with Myrna Loi, the woman she met on Earth Fourteen. They've started a business, and Kathy-Joel is thinking about marriage, even though the laws on Earth Fourteen don’t favor the LGBTQIA set.

Kathy is getting signals from Joel. They have a psychic link, and Kathy learns that Joel has built a portal machine on her old Earth.

The Center, a fascist group on Earth Fourteen, has not been destroyed. They have portals of their own, and Linda Rawlins, Kathy’s psychotic ex-girlfriend, is still alive and eager to wreak her own brand of vengeance.

Telling a story was a funny thing. It had rules and conventions, and all the experts in writing—whoever those experts were—said that a person should never start any story with a dream sequence. In their minds, beginning with a dream sequence or the main character having a vision was trite, boring…trope-ish. Maybe that was true, but in my case, my dream was what led me to this point in my life.

It began with me having a dreamless sleep. In fact, I’d never dreamed in my life, not once, not that I could remember. Some people said that they could recall their dreams with perfect clarity. Some said that they couldn’t. But for me, dreams in my life were non-existent.

Still, this dream—more like a voice telling me that I had to listen to them—was more than a little disturbing. The voice, very familiar, although I couldn’t quite place it, said that I had to listen, had to be careful, and that we had to meet. “I’ll look for you,” it had said. “Please wait, please be patient.”

That was it, and I’d had those image-sound dreams three times since arriving here, and each time I’d woken up in a cold sweat, heart hammering away, mouth dry, and mind whirling. For anyone else, that was disturbing enough, but in my case, it was beyond ridiculous, as what had happened to me should never have happened in the first place.

Here meant Earth Fourteen, and as whacky as that sounded, it was true. People had only one life to live. I’d had two lives, one on my old Earth, and one on my current Earth. On my old Earth, I was Joel Silverman, four months shy of turning eighteen, living with my parents and going to high school.

During my first date ever with Jennie Garver, the hottest girl in school, a fight with some punks forced me to run for my life. At the height of under five-seven, skinny, with no muscle and no fighting ability, I had to escape.

Perhaps Jennie understood, and perhaps not. I never got an answer, as my escape had led me to enter a research lab downtown—and why would a research lab be downtown, anyway—that had built a portal to view other Earths. Sci-fi fantasy had become fact, and a force that I couldn’t fight pulled me inside the portal and sent me down a corridor of white light.

To make a long story short, I went through this corridor in a matter of nanoseconds, and unbeknownst to me at that time, that corridor led to this new Earth. Along the way, I met and exchanged bodies and some memories with Katherine Goldbloom, a child prodigy turned teen prodigy, now just shy of twenty years of age, someone brilliant in physics as well as mathematics.

It was weird; it was supposed to be physically impossible, but it had happened. Long story short—again—I ended up in her body on her Earth, and there, I came face to face with a quasi-fascist regime, homophobia—Kathy was gay, and I entered into a relationship with a woman named Myrna Loi—and that didn’t sit well with some people.

Things went from weird to weirder, as a fascistic group called the Center tried to silence anyone connected with the portal machine. Myrna and I had managed to best them. After a lot of them were arrested across the country, the true believers went underground. “They’ll be back,” Myrna had told me. “Like cockroaches, they’ll come out when they think they can get something.”

So far, they hadn’t, but that didn’t mean that they weren’t planning something, and to make matters worse, I couldn’t get back to my Earth, as the machine that had brought me to my new home had been destroyed.
