What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger…

Jess is possessed of an unwavering love for Zendara, and for her husband, Gedeaddon. But these are the times that try men’s souls, and Jess finds herself locked into a life of unimaginable hell. What has she done to deserve such a fate? She believes herself at fault, and she sadly endures the unendurable.

Caught in a world where she can no longer distinguish friend from foe, Jess finds herself in the midst of a battle from which none can emerge unscathed. The balance of life as she knows it is about to tip, as she finds herself on the edge of an abyss where not simply her life, but the existence of the world as she knows it is at stake.

“We need to talk,” Serigo answered softly.

She splashed the water angrily. “Now?”

“The sooner, the better. How long before you finish?”

She rose to her feet, wrapped a towel around herself, stepped out of the tub, and angrily flung open the bath room door. “If it’s not one man stumbling in and out of my life, it’s another.” She stormed into the room and, deliberately ignoring him, headed for the armoire. She grabbed a robe and slammed the door before meeting his amused gaze. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

His glance flicking to the balcony, Serigo locked her gaze. “You didn’t give me the chance to mention I wasn’t alone.”

“I don’t even want to know.” Jess stormed past and slammed the bath room door behind her. “You are so through.” She rapidly dried off and, running the towel over her hair, pulled on her robe. Flinging open the door, she marched over to him. “If I were tall enough, and if I were a man, I’d do whatever a man would do.”

 “Hit him,” Rathe casually suggested.

“Challenge him to a duel,” Thorne volunteered. “And dub the prince as your champion.”

Jess spun on them. “And you two should have known better than to come into my room to begin with. Especially you.” She met the amused amber gaze.

“I’m impressed.” A grinning Rathe stepped forward.

She held her ground. “Why?”

“It takes guts to take on his type. Especially him.” Thorne winked.

Jess tentatively stepped back once. “It does?”

“Those of his nature usually slit throats,” he cautioned lightly.

 “That’s not funny.”

Thorne leaned close and whispered in her ear, “Rathe is an assassin. We’re going to make sure this stronghold is safe and to your standards.” He strode to the door, then spun and bowed. “Lady.” He left the room.

“Personally, he’s more dangerous than I am.” Rathe dashed out and closed the door behind him.

Jess faced him. “What are you doing?”

“Securing the stronghold,” Serigo answered. “When a commander surrenders his position, the land and buildings revert to Arravis’ control. I’m simply doing what he would do or would have done if he knew what was happening since the reigning high commander is a healer and not a warrior, Jess.”

“You don’t think Gedeaddon’s coming back, do you?”

 “No,” he stated flatly.

His brashness fanned her ire. Marching up to him, she pointed at his chest. “You are pushing the line.”

His gaze swept over her. “Do you believe he’s coming back?”

 “He—”

“Yes or no?” He straightened. “I will not yield. Do you believe he’s coming back?”

“I don’t know.” Jess dropped her hand and lowered her head. She both wanted and dreaded his return so badly she could hardly stand it.

Serigo looked at her. “After what he did to you, do you want him to come back?”

She closed her eyes. “He’s my husband, my life mate. It’s his right.”

“And I’m your procreation mate,” he stated quietly.

She nervously stepped back. “What are you saying?”

“As your procreation mate, I have the right to take you, but I don’t because you asked me not to, and I have honored our arrangement.” He gently cupped her chin and, raising her face, caught her gaze. “My question is what gives him the right to hurt you?” He gently brushed his thumb across the bruise on her cheek. “This infuriates me.” He tenderly touched her shoulder. “This is attempted murder of someone I swore an oath to protect. If being your mate gives him the right to do with you as he sees fit, I should also have the same power.” He searched her face. “Do I have that power?”

 “No. And neither does he.”

“Good.” He dropped his hand. “I’ve never gone against your wishes, so please, grant me permission to at least provide you with what protection I can. Or I will take it,” he added quietly.

“Do I have a choice?” When he shook his head, Jess yielded. “Fine. I give you what you ask.”

“Very well.” Serigo turned for the door and grabbed the handle. He stopped and spun toward her. “By the way, I do like what’s under your robe.”

She glanced down and was shocked. Her open robe exposed her cleavage, the inner slope of her breasts, along with her belly. Hastily closing it, she blushed. “How long?”

“Since you started walking toward me.”

She glared at him. “And you said nothing?”

“We were in a discussion I intended to finish.” He grinned broadly. “I didn’t mind the view or see more than the valley.”

 “Serigo!”

“You know where I am.” He closed the door as he left to deal with the soldiers.
