Sunlight filtered through the umbrella of pine branches above them. Cain held Dana in his arms. He had fallen in love with her and could hardly wait to make her his.

He ignored the voice, tried to shut it out. Looking down at Dana, the blood rushed through his veins, his heart beating a staccato rhythm. He longed for her like he’d never experienced with any other woman. He was taking a huge risk. If she were the one, if this was true love, he should be feeling the change by now, the change that could scare her away forever. Why hadn’t it begun? He had held off making love to her for that very reason. He had to slow down. He needed to tell her carefully about himself first.

“Dana, stop. There’s something I have to tell you.” Her next words startled him. Gone was his cute sweet Dana…

“Shut up, Cain. Just fuck me. I’m horny as hell.”

“If we’re to continue our relationship, it’s important.”

“Who the fuck said I want a relationship? Sure, we’ve dated a few times. Hell, you’re a good time guy. And a looker, too, baby, but I’m not interested in something permanent.”

“I thought we had something real going here.”

“You thought wrong, babe. I’m too young to get serious.”

He let go of her and stood. His heart had just taken a jolt. For the first time in his life, a woman had managed to hurt him. “I’ll take you home,” he said through tight lips.

“Oh, baby, don’t be like that? Come here,” she coaxed, her arms held out.

He ignored her and angrily put on his clothes. “Get dressed.”

“Oh, I like you this way. All alpha male and overpowering. Want to give me a spanking for being naughty?”

“Fine, you can walk home then.”

“Fuck you!” she shouted, her pretty face distorted with anger, her lips pouting. “I’ll find someone else to satisfy my needs.”

He waited while she put on her clothes. When she was finished, he walked ahead, back to the road, to the car.

“I don’t know what the hell I saw in you anyway. Look at that old car. You’ve obviously got no money.”

Another stab in the gut. So that’s what she was after. Someone with money. Why had she bothered going out with him at all?

After he’d dropped her off, he returned to the farm. His friends all knew who he’d been dating. They’d cautioned him, but he didn’t heed their warnings.

He parked the car. Instead of going to the main house, he went back to the forest. His favorite place was where he needed to be right now.

Anger at himself for being so blind churned within him. His body trembled, shook harder. He didn’t fight it. There was no need. As he walked, he discarded his clothes and continued on, naked.

By the time he reached the pond, he’d changed. Raising his arms to the sky, he roared, venting his frustration, then ran to the water and dove into the icy water. His anger had simmered down. What he mainly felt now was anger at himself for being so naïve.

Floating on his back, he gazed at the sky. He still felt hurt, but what was damaged the most? His heart or his pride?
