He would start a journey to find his first born, and fall in love with a woman who seemed to have been made just to heal his broken heart.
It’s an old saying that when life closes a door, God opens a window, but could this saying be applied to the turbulent and difficult times of Eric Weber’s life? His loving wife died suddenly in childbirth, and his world fell apart. Not only had he lost a companion, but he lost a daughter he never even got a chance to hold. But Life had other plans for Eric. As a teenager, he sacrificed his chance to be a father for the hopes and dreams of his friend, Lucy Manchester, but now, he would start a journey to find his first born, and fall in love with a woman who seemed to have been made just to heal his broken heart.
Eric stood by the two graves, his hands locked within each other, hanging down behind his back. His head hung low and his eyes were closed. With a bruised and almost broken heart, a small part of him ached to be there, deep within the earth along with the two women that he loved so dearly. All the sounds around him faded and soon he could hear the doctors and nurses fussing about once again. He remembered the touch of his wife's hand and the perspiration glittering across her forehead.
"Everything's going to be fine," he had said to her, anxiously awaiting the birth of his daughter.
"I know. I'm just scared." she said, looking up at him with admiration and love. And as always, the memories turned sour--the screams piercing his ears and jabbing him in the heart. Then, there was silence--that ominous, terrible silence.
He shot his head up, tears rushing down his flushed cheeks. They were so perfectly happy; how could he lose everything so quickly in just one day? He wished he was right and that everything was fine that day, but instead, he had lost a wonderful wife and a precious daughter that he never got a chance to know. Staring at her name on the tombstone, he tried to remember her the way she was in life.
"Crying won't bring her back," said Drake, his younger brother.
"No, but it helps to let her go." He began to shiver and wrapped his arms tightly around himself.
"I'm sure God will give you another chance at a child."
Eric wiped his tears away and weakly smiled at his brother.
"But I already have one."
"What are you talking about?" asked Drake, his forehead crinkling and little squint lines appearing in the corner of his eyes. Eric's mouth curved in a faint, bitter smile before responding.
"I'm going to go get a plane ticket. I'll explain when I get there." he replied.
"What are you going to do?"
Eric raked his hand through the coarse tendrils of his hair.
"I'm going to go get back something I gave up sixteen years ago."
