He was without a doubt the most handsome man she'd ever set eyes on. And he was approaching her. He was approaching quickly, using broad and muscular shoulders like battering rams to shove his way through the thickest part of the crowd on the Dreamland Ballroom's dance floor.

Quickly, Cindy raised her hand. It was an instinctive gesture, one she knew she made but was powerless to control...a self-protective ducking of her head at the same time a partially balled fist came up to shield her mouth and nose.

She hoped he would stop before he reached her.

She hoped he wouldn't stop.

Most of all she prayed the new-penny sheen of hair she'd colored herself after the beauty shop closed and her sleek new European cut and the mail-order Italian print silk dress to which she'd treated herself would distract him from her other, less than endearing features. She hoped like anything he wouldn't notice her nose...too large. Or her chin...too small and underdeveloped. Or her teeth that protruded to such an alarming degree her lips barely managed to cover them even when they weren't quivering. Which they were now. Violently.
For a minute, Cindy thought about running. For a minute, she almost did.
But it was already too late.
