Never doubt fate can be working for you, even when it’s against you.

Janine, the wife of Jason, a retired builder, organizes a boys weekend with his old surfing mates, who he hasn’t seen for years due to an argument which broke the group apart. But now with Jason’s life coming to a premature end, she hopes with the aid of her ex-lover she can fulfill his long-time dream to relive his youth.

The scene is set for a wild weekend of drinking and surfing on a deserted beach with the greatest of waves. With a hired woody, Malibu boards and camping gear, they set out for the weekend of their lives, surfing, drinking and telling yarns. All goes well until some unexpected visitors arrive to complicate their weekend.

Karen and her girls arrive, to soak up the sun, causing a frenzy amongst the boys and a pairing off, which sees the weekend become one of love and frustration for Jason. Torn between life and death, wife and lover, he becomes alive and depressed, and presents a stunning conclusion which neither his mates nor Janine could have anticipated.

She was hesitant, finally picking up the phone and pressing in the numbers. It wasn’t what her husband would have wanted, but he was too pig-headed and proud to forgive the past. She listened intently to the dial tones, wondering what she might say as it had been years since she’d spoken to Colin, the last time being in anger. The dial tone stopped and her heart jumped as a man answered. “Hello!” There was no mistaking that rough, strong, and controlling voice.

“Col, it’s Janine,” she answered nervously, trying to hide the feelings built up inside her. Her heart jumped and she swallowed, waiting for him to respond.

“Janine? It’s been a long time. How are you?”

“I’m fine, thanks. I was phoning because…”

“How’s Jason?” he asked with some reluctance.

“It’s about Jason that I’m phoning you,” she answered, her voice becoming quivery.

“What’s he done?”

“Nothing...he’s done nothing, but he’s not the best.”

“What’s wrong?” He caught the tremor in her voice and sounded concerned.

She coughed to clear her throat, though there was nothing to clear. “He’s not having the best of times. He’s ill—dying, and it’s like he’s given up.”

“Dying? What the hell happened?” he asked, dropping the tough charade and showing his more sensitive side.

“He’s got cancer, and the doctors have told him he’s got about three months, maybe a little more, but he’s lost all interest in living. It’s not like him. I’ve never seen him this low and I don’t know what to do.” She sobbed, nearly losing it.

“Well…I’m not sure there’s anything I can do. If the doctors have…”

“Col, there’s something he’s always talked about doing, but never had the guts to,” she told him.

“What’s that?”

“He’s always wanted to relive his youth, with you, Blue, and Charlie. He’s always wanted to contact you all and go surfing again, if only for a weekend.”

“You’re kidding? It’s been bloody years since we did something as stupid as that.” He laughed at the thought of it.

“It’s what he’s been wanting for a long time, Col. He still sees Charlie at times, and he’s talked about it with him, but not recently. He always said Charlie was interested, though he was never game enough to call you, and I’m not sure where Blue is these days.”

“I don’t know either, but I do know where his brother works. What is it you’re actually proposing, Janine?” he asked.

“Would it be too much to ask if you could organize a surfing weekend away with the boys and Jason, it’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time, and time is something he doesn’t have a lot of now. It might also heal the rift between you both, and put some new life back into a life that’s ebbing away fast.”

“I haven’t ridden a board for forty years! I don’t even own one now,” he grumbled.

“Either does Jason or Charlie, but can’t you hire them? I don’t mind paying for the whole weekend if it means it gives Jason something to live for again.”

“Strewth! Could you imagine me on a board at my age? I’ve got a physique like Porky Pig. I’d probably fall off, even if I could get up.”

“Surely it’s like riding a bike. You do it once and you never forget how.”

“That’s sex, Janine, and you can forget how.” He laughed. “When do you envisage this weekend being?”

“As soon as possible, if you can arrange it. The sooner he gets out of the house and into the fresh air the better.”

“Give me a couple of days to see what I can find out, and I’ll get back to you.”

“Col, Jason doesn’t know I’ve phoned you, so if he answers…”

“I’ll hang up,” he promised.

“Thanks. You’re a pal,” she said, relieved he had gone along with the scheme.

“Only a pal?” He laughed and hung up.

He was more than a pal in those early years of the sixties, when the boys were all mates and getting to know life. She was his girl. Col was the self-assured, confident one who knew what he wanted and took it. He was the leader of the pack and she was his girl, the one who hung around while he enjoyed himself, and was there whenever he wanted her company. She was not alone of course. All the boys had girls, but she was the one they all envied, and sometimes hated. She was Col’s girl.

It was a pack of four, Col, Blue, Charlie, and Jason, all school mates, and had continued on through the first few years of their working lives. They drank, went out, womanized and surfed, which was everything to them. Surfing was actually at the top of the list, drinking and womanizing were only diversions—distractions from their first love. After work, weekends and any free time was spent in the water. They were all the epitome of the Australian surfer—tanned, with blonde hair and a body with muscles that rippled as they walked across the sand carrying their massive boards to and from the water. That was the life they loved. The exhilaration of catching the wave of the day. They loved the feeling of the board sliding down that glassy wall of water as it stood so majestically until it curled ever so slowly over, crashing down on any unsuspecting rider who waited too long or neglected to kneel and bow before the might of the sea. As a result, he would be ejected from the tube at an alarming rate of speed into a calming world of white water and froth. They loved it!
