A man without freedom is a man without a choice.

America has lapsed into a fascist state. Television, newspapers, the radio, movies and the internet are censored. Continental Security guards, government agents, are abducting citizens at night. Several are afraid because they feel they are being watched.

Three nights later, I left my apartment, and started walking toward the grocery store. Above me, the stars twinkled. Across the street, somewhere close to a streetlight, a dog growled louder. In front of a dark car, a silhouetted German Shepherd gripped a man's pant leg with its teeth. The man fell and the dog dragged him several feet. Suddenly, two men in dark-blue uniforms lifted batons and hit the man's shoulders.

"Iiiiii," the man screamed.

Thirty feet behind them, a third human silhouette, a man in a dark-blue uniform, started dragging a limp human body toward the dog.

The dog let go. Both uniformed men picked up the limp man's arms and dragged him away. Within seconds, they reached a gray car, opened the back door, pushed the limp figure inside, and slammed the door shut. After hesitating, both walked over to the other limp figure, then all three dragged it to a second car, opened the back door, pushed the figure inside, and slammed the door shut After whispering, both men walked toward the car they had just left. One opened the driver side and climbed in. On the opposite side, the other figure got in, both doors shut and the car drove off. When the car was farther down the street, its taillights came on.

As my heart started pounding faster, I wondered why the dog and men in dark-blue attacked this man? Were they policemen, hired thugs, or drug dealers?

Perhaps the beating wasn't my business, but I felt that I should have done something. I walked away while struggling with mixed emotions of guilt and uncertainty, and entered a grocery store, then picked up a small basket. In my mind, the man's screams grew louder as I picked up a loaf of white bread.
