Down on her luck cowgirl and sometimes bar waitress Sarah Sutton never meant to get run over in the middle of nowhere.

Down on her luck cowgirl and sometimes bar waitress Sarah Sutton never meant to get run over in the middle of nowhere. Certainly not by the best-looking man she’s ever seen, and certainly not by the flying saucer he’s somewhat inexpertly piloting. But when she looks into Ralph Watkins’ eyes, when she feels his touch and realizes her “space alien” is about to make love to her, it’s like Sarah’s never lived before.

The place was deserted.

According to the sign in the window, both the seen-better-days Bangkok Café and the Quonset-hut garage next door would be open for business at 6AM. Five hours from now. And in the meantime...

Coyotes.

The sound of them...their distant, drawn-out and faintly disturbing, primeval yowl...was as familiar to Sarah Sutton as the sound of her own name. As familiar as any other sound she'd heard since the very start of her life. But it made her shudder. Made her straighten away from the sign in the dirt-streaked window, twitching nervously at the hem of her barmaid's blue jeans mini-skirt as she peered with anxious eyes at the desert that spread for miles in every direction, black and sinister and no longer feeling at all like home.

Nothing moving out there. Nothing but coyotes. Certainly nothing in the 'town' of Bangkok, New Mexico.

Groaning deep in the back of her throat, Sarah adjusted her cowboy hat and shoved a wisp of copper-colored hair back from her face as she stepped off the concrete pad at the front of the restaurant.

Her ancient Ford pick-up sat fifty feet away, midway between the garage and a weather-beaten Texaco pump. Right where it had finally coasted to a stop after dying on the last, long hill that led into 'town'.

Nothing moved out there. Nothing was out of the ordinary. And yet...

There was something about this particular night. Something about the heat lightning that flickered blue-gray above a distant, jagged rim of hills. Something eerie. Expectant. Vaguely unsettling, and yet hypnotic.

As if the night waited.

Shuddering again, shivering deep down inside, Sarah turned back to her truck. Until the morning came, she'd feel much better...much safer...locked inside.

Far out on the desert, the coyote began its wavering cry again only to bite it back abruptly, half-uttered. And this time Sarah shivered harder, looking around at the ink-dark night shrouding those distant hills and the deep valleys in between...darkness that shrouded everything, right up to the edges of the faded-yellow circle of light from the single fixture mounted high on a pole above the gas pump.

All movement had ceased. All sound, too.

No breath of wind stirred dust-dry air.

No night creatures scrabbled past on secret rounds.

Shadows froze, and so did time.

The desert paused. Listened. Held its breath. And for the tiniest fraction of a second, so did she. Then, shivering again despite furnace-like heat that hadn't dissipated in the hours since the sun had gone down, she tucked her hands into the pockets of her skirt to still their sudden trembling and hurried across rough gravel toward the safety of her truck.

The silence was...wrong. It was...
