Grey wants to claim Mara as his own, but when he does, things don’t quite go as planned.

Mara met Grey years before. He’s trouble, in and out of jail, the personification of a bad boy. Yet, the attraction between them is unmistakable.

There’s only one problem, Mara is married.

Time has passed since their initial meeting, but Grey has never left her mind. As she comes out of work one night, Mara finds herself face to face with Grey.

Grey kidnaps her, only to discover that her marriage is in shambles and the only reason she hasn’t left her husband is because of her two elderly dogs. Grey has secrets of his own. His life had completely changed since their first meeting. He tells her about his life, and the fateful night he tried to die. Grey had learned that Mara is his soul mate and Mara wants to stay with him, but she has to go home. When Grey releases her, he promises that when the time comes, he will be there for her.

Mara goes home to her miserable, argumentative husband and the two loves of her life. Yet, Mara soon discovers that she and her dogs are dying and death may claim her before Grey has a chance to.

Mara locked the door to the diner and headed out into the parking lot. It was one of the rare nights she was alone, all the customers long gone. Sherry had been the second on the late night shift, but she had gone home sick hours before. Mara was exhausted.

She clicked her car alarm, watching as the lights blinked to notify her that the doors were unlocked. As she walked around the car, a lump of fear rose in her throat. A shadowed man stood and walked toward her. “Hey, Mara. What’s up?”

Her shoulders sagged in sudden recognition. “Grey, how are you?”

“I’m good. How’s the hubby?”

“The same. Why don’t you stop by the diner during my shift and we can talk.”

Grey smiled, pursing his lips as he raised one eyebrow and then shook his head no. “No can do. I no longer have much taste for food.”

It was an odd reply. “And why is that?” He really was a cocky, but extremely alluring individual. His steel blue eyes were absorbing, his slightly rumpled, dirty blond hair blowing gently around his shoulders in the slight breeze.

“It’s kind of a long story. Get in and we’ll take a ride.”

Mara’s chuckle froze in her throat as she felt the strong, surely male hand upon her shoulder. He nudged her forward with his body, opening the back door. In a single movement, he snatched her keys and shoved her into the backseat. Before she could even right herself, the motor started, and they were backing up. Grey was sitting at her side and the large, burley man who had pushed her into the seat was driving. All she could see of him was a head of thick black hair. “What the hell just happened?”

“You first. Why are you still with your husband? You didn’t strike me as too happy when we talked last. What was it, two and a half years ago?”

“Something like that. When you first asked me out. What was it, five or so years ago?” she asked to antagonize him with his own words. “I was considering a divorce. Shortly after that, my husband was in a car accident. He’s not physically paralyzed, but he has damage to his spine, and it’s mentally paralyzed him. I’m not happy, but... we’ve been married for a long time, and he needs me.”

He pursed his lips, his tongue floating over the bottom one before sliding back into his mouth. “What would you say if I told you that I need you? I’ve been informed that we were together in a past life and my present existence will never be complete without you. Considering that I’m eternal, that would really suck.”

Mara rolled her eyes. “Get real, Grey. Incarceration does not make you eternal.”

“Obviously not. But it supplied me with the connections to get where I am now. I got out about a year ago.”

“Isn’t a year out about standard for you? Aren’t you a little bit worried about how long the sentence is for kidnapping?” He was so damn hot, but also completely unstable. He had been in and out of jail for years.

“Not really,” he replied with a laugh.

“This is not funny. What the hell are you thinking?”

“I already told you. We’re meant to become immortal together, and I don’t really want to wait anymore. I knew there was something special about you the first time I saw you and I was right. Can’t you feel it, Mara? We’re supposed to be as one.”

She remembered all too clearly the first time she had met Grey. There had been an attraction that was almost electric. It had left her shaking with desire for him. Mara had not given in to her wishes, even when Grey had returned a week later to ask her for a date. It had been an extremely tempting offer, but she had made a vow to Ike and she would not defile his trust in her. “I feel scared, Grey. What the hell are you doing to me?”

“I’m talking to you.”

“I need to go home. I have responsibilities. Ike will be worried sick.”

Grey removed her cell phone from her purse. The strap of the leather bag had been over her head, and she had no idea how Grey had ended up with it. He flipped open the phone, scrolling through the phonebook and then hit the call button. He set the phone on speaker and stared at her as it rang. Ike answered with his customary, “What?” and Grey chuckled.

“Ike, you don’t know me. I’m borrowing your wife for a while. I won’t harm her, for now. Don’t worry, if she really wants to come home, she’ll be returned. If not, then consider this your call for a divorce.”

Mara stared at him in open-mouthed disbelief. “Ike, they have me in my car,” she shouted, unsure if he heard the last word as Grey snapped the phone shut.

“Now it’s up to him if he worries. He has been informed that you’re safe.”

“Am I safe?”

“For now. I want you to hear me out. Then we can take it from there.”
