Cooking with Stew

Gloria Edwards, a rich classy lady, feels a need to open a soup kitchen in hopes of making a difference on the poo...

“Yes, boss lady.” Stewart watched her move to the far side of the kitchen. She pushed a chair toward a high shelf and climbed up to reach something. He studied her slender, sexy form. The red apron, covered in flour, made her even more appealing. He managed to pry his gaze away from the female distraction. Grabbing the ball of dough, he placed it inside the mixing bowl to let it rise. He followed Gloria to the tables and assisted with the preparation.

“Help me with the tablecloths. I want them to go this way.” She motioned with her hands.

“How do you like running the soup kitchen?”

There was a long, lengthy silence before she replied. “I love it. It’s good to know people are going to bed with a full stomach. I see the appreciation on their faces. It makes it worth the effort.”

“I can see that.”

Gloria used her hands to smooth out the creases on the cloth. “I guess next week you will be leaving?”

Stewart didn’t know how to respond. He enjoyed working in the kitchen and the many perks that went along with it. “I guess so.”

“You deserve much better than this. You’re use to the glamorous life, not slaving away over a hot stove. You really are out of your element. No pun intended,” she added.

Stewart couldn’t believe she made a joke. He knew deep down there was a fun side to her. “They replaced my post with a new bodyguard.”

“I’m sorry.”

He heard the sincerity in her tone.

“I’m sure something else will come along.”

Stewart wasn’t interested in something else. He wanted what he had right in front of him.

“Do you mind grabbing a wet rag from the kitchen? I want to wipe these tablecloths.”

He saluted her and headed straight for the other room. “Where are they?” he shouted.

“They are underneath the sink!”

Stewart pulled open every drawer beneath the sink. He located the clean rags in the very last cupboard. He grabbed one and soaked it under the faucet. While he was completing this task, he glanced across at the mixing bowl. His eyes widened. “Oh shit!”

“Is something wrong?”

Stewart panicked. He forgot to cover the dough. He heard her footsteps approach. “No, everything is fine!” He placed his hand in the sticky dough and pulled out a rat. He cursed his bad luck. “How the hell did you get up here?” His gaze followed the dishtowel that hung over the rack and dangled near the floor.

Gloria came around the corner. “How does the dough look?”

Stewart held the squirming rodent behind his back. “It’s fur-tastic,” he stuttered.

“What?” Her brow creased.

“It’s fantastic,” he corrected. Using his other hand, he threw her the dishcloth. “I’ll be with you in a second.”

She had a curious look on her face. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes, everything is fine. I need to step outside for a moment.” Happy that she didn’t pursue the questions, he watched her turn and head toward a table. Stewart grimaced at the large rat in his hand. He unlocked the back door and threw the dough-covered rodent outside. “Don’t come back,” he whispered. Relieved that he got rid of the evidence, he picked up the dough and tossed it in a pan. He quickly molded it to the shape of the container and placed it inside the oven. “What temperature should we bake it?”

Gloria immediately entered. “Did it rise?”

Sweat trickled down his forehead. “It was the best damn thing I’ve ever seen.” He hated to lie to her, but if she discovered what he did, the shit would hit the fan.

She instructed him on the temperature. “You’re sure working up a sweat.”

“I’m not use to the heat.” Stewart turned the dial on the oven. “I’ll help you with the tablecloths.” He brushed past and tried to act casual. “Why are we baking bread anyway? I thought this was a soup kitchen.”

She assisted him with the last table. “It is a soup kitchen, but I thought it might be nice to add a few other items to the menu. There’s nothing like warm bread to go with hot soup, especially on a cold day like today.”

Stewart tried not to think about the rat in the dough. He couldn’t imagine anyone eating it. “Can I help with anything else?”

“There is something I would like to try.”

He noticed she eyed him like forbidden fruit. Maybe I’m imagining things, but I think the cologne is getting to her.

She sniffed the air and blushed. “I want to make a stew.”

He didn’t know if he heard correctly. “What did you say?”

“I want stew for lunch.”

Stewart thought this was too good to be true. The woman finally wanted him. He placed a hand in her hair and gently stroked it. “I thought you would never ask. I knew you felt it, too.”

Gloria stared up at him wide-eyed. She reached up and slapped his arm. “I said I want to make a stew. I didn’t say I wanted to make out with you!”

He retaliated. “That’s an easy mistake to make. There’s been a sexual attraction between us since I started working here. Admit it, you feel it, too.”

Gloria didn’t say a word. She silently entered the kitchen.

Stewart followed. “You’re not as hard as nails, I know it.”

She pulled down a huge stockpot and proceeded to gather the ingredients she needed. “I don’t want to talk about it!”

“Boy, you must have been hurt in the past.”

She spun around and struck back. “For your information, I have been hurt before. And it wasn’t only one boyfriend. It was a whole bunch of them!”

Gloria Edwards, a rich classy lady, feels a need to open a soup kitchen in hopes of making a difference on the poor side of town. Stewart Kent, a bodyguard forced to do community service after a bar brawl, never thought he would find true love until he met his match at Gloria’s Soup Kitchen. When their two worlds collide, tempers flare and sparks fly. Gloria soon discovers that cooking with Stew proves to be flawed with many disasters. Can she overlook his messy mistakes and see the good in the man of her dreams, or will she cast him aside like yesterday’s garbage?

Dennis clicked off the TV and followed the noise. He stood at the picture window, which overlooked the backyard. Headstones were shadowed in the moonlight’s glow. Should I dare enter the cemetery after dark? Dennis contemplated this action and then decided against it. He waited, almost afraid to move. Then he felt the quake again. He went to the head of the staircase and listened. Creak, creak. Someone or something moved in the basement. He bit his bottom lip. The footsteps below grew louder. Dennis turned on his heel and entered the kitchen. He stood on the threshold of the entrance that led to the basement. He had to go down. If anything, he had to do this for his son. If Ryan really was in Dead World, Dennis knew he would be the only one who could save him.

Taking a deep breath, he started down the creaking stairs. Once at the bottom, he stood on the concrete floor. He was about to move forward when a cold sensation brushed past him. Dennis stood frozen in fear. A broad wisp of a figure floated toward the bedroom and stopped. It turned around and stared hard at him. The moment it did, Dennis screamed. It was George Traster! Then he turned around and disappeared. Dennis couldn’t remember walking toward the door, but the next thing he knew, he stood outside with his sweaty palm on the handle. “Come on, you can do this.” The knob turned easily in his hand and the door creaked open. With uneasy steps, he entered and fumbled to turn on the light. He pulled the string and the room came into view. Nothing had changed. The old shabby bed and dresser were the only furniture left. Then his eyes scanned the mess on the floor. Rubble from the loose concrete wall lay scattered on the ground.

As the thunderous noise moved near, more concrete rubble fell to the floor. Dennis reached over and pulled on the light string. He stood in total darkness. The small filter of white light he had seen the first time he had entered this room, engulfed it. The tiny peephole had obviously enlarged. Dennis eagerly knelt to the floor and peered through the gap in the wall. The hole had definitely increased in size. An eerie white fog rose from the ground. Dennis adjusted his eyes and peered through again. He thought he saw a shadow pass only inches from where he sat. What the hell is on the other side of this wall?

He took a deep breath and moved in closer for another look. He heard voices and the distinct sound of horse’s hooves. He strained to see more, but the white fog lifted. All he perceived was utter darkness. Another chill engulfed his body.

“Daddy, help me! Where are you? They’re going to find me!”

“Ryan!” Dennis had the sudden urge to knock the wall down. He needed to find the sledgehammer. He had one stored on a shelf in his garage. Dennis slowly backed out of the room and ran up the stairs. Tonight he would enter Dead World and rescue his son from an eternity of hell.

After Dennis Campbell has a tragic accident that leaves him hospitalized for a month and his son dead, he has horrifying dreams. He visualizes a place called Dead World and sees his son pleading at the dark gates. Dennis, who has suffered a recent divorce, decides to buy a house in the country and start a new life. He begins to hear strange noises and witnesses apparitions. The haunting continues until one night, Dennis discovers a secret room in his basement and another world through the concrete wall. With the help from his friend, Henry Murphy, they enter into a whole new world. It is in this dark and dangerous place, their mission begins. But the clock is ticking. They only have ten days to complete their journey or they are stuck in Dead World forever.

Kris Kringle is a thin, negative, lonely young man looking for meaning in the big city. One day, his life is about...

Early the next morning, Kris woke to see a thick blanket of snow outside the window. He rose from his bed and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. As he surveyed the yard, he thought about his encounter with the stranger the night before. He laughed it off and reminded himself that he's been working too many long hours. Kris walked over to his closet and stood undecided. Had I imagined things last night? He wasn't sure. Thinking it was all a bad dream, he swung the door open and gasped. The red suit still hung in the closet, but this time instead of only one outfit, his entire wardrobe was red. He screamed and fell backward onto the bed. He lay immobile for the longest time. Kris didn't have the strength to regain his feet. He silently reminded himself to get a grip and took a long, deep breath. He shakily stood and approached the closet.

Warily eyeing the numerous red garments, he reached out and touched the fabric. He saw a note attached to the sleeve of one coat. Carefully, he unhooked the paper and read the sloppy handwriting.

Put on the suit, already. They are all the same size. Do I need to cover your entire apartment with these clothes? Get the hint.

Your pal, Mikey.

Kris rubbed his eyes in disbelief. Who is this clown and how did he break into my apartment? Realizing there were no logical answers to these questions, he shook his head in disgust. This is totally insane. I need to go to work. I don't have time for child's games. He grabbed the same shirt and pants he wore the day before, then entered the bathroom to shower and dress. By the time he shaved the stubble from his chin and departed the steamy shower, he covered his mouth in shock. The entire bedroom was a heap of red suits. Everywhere he stepped, a plush red garment lay under foot. He walked around the red heap and entered the kitchen. To his surprise, the mounds of red suits touched the ceiling. I'm losing my mind. This isn't possible.

Kris Kringle is a thin, negative, lonely young man looking for meaning in the big city. One day, his life is about to change when he meets a strange elf on the street. He soon discovers his destiny is to become the Santa Claus, but in order for the magic to come alive, he’s got to find the perfect mate to complete him. Kris must overcome his own personal obstacles and learn the true meaning of Christmas. With the holiday looming, he searches the city streets for the perfect wife. Can Kris find his soul mate and learn about the spirit of giving in one night? Anything is possible.

In this next great adventure, Leslie Burrows is sent on a mission to save the Enchanted Land from a powerful force...

Samej sat on an old wooden bench and absently stroked the head of his cat, Noissapmoc. He closed his eyes in the heat of the day and listened to the happy chatter from the birds in the trees. Today was a good day. In fact, he figured this was the best day of his life. He had sent a message to a young woman who lived near the Spirited Forest. When he opened his mail, much to his delight, it was a positive response from her. Samej smiled when he read the letter and stroked his long white beard. Leslie Burrows was going to meet with him first thing in the morning to try and help his people.

Weeks earlier, he had heard the astounding news about her quest to break the curse cast upon Prince Peter. With faith and determination, she destroyed the evil sorcerer and set the prince free. The latest gossip to reach his ears was the delightful news that they were to wed in the future. Samej immediately sent Leslie an urgent message before that happened. He didn’t want any delays. What was happening in the Enchanted Land required a powerful wizard.

He stopped stroking the cat and leaned back in his seat. He gazed out at the desolate land. Aside from his tiny shack in the woods, there was nothing surrounding it. Samej had moved back to his birthplace when the chaos started in the Enchanted Land. He was old and tired. His days in the wizardry world had come to an end. It was only a matter of time before he would die in the comfort of his bed.

Samej stretched out his feeble legs and sighed. His black cat purred loudly. “You will have a new master soon,” he spoke softly. “I want you to obey what she says. That’s very important.” Noissapmoc seemed to understand. She rubbed her wet nose against his gnarled hand and meowed.

He smiled in recollection. It wasn’t that long ago when he acquired this affectionate cat. Samej had been browsing the stands at an open market when a man in a striped coat called to the crowd to gather around. The magician waved his wand, produced a rabbit out of a hat and made his assistant disappear. The audience applauded politely and one man in the crowd asked for something more daring. The magician, without hesitation, grabbed the black cat that was sitting on a nearby stool. He motioned for Samej to come close and assist him with his next act. Kindly he obliged and stood next to the magician in wonder.

“I have the powers,” the magician said, “to make this cat do as I say. When I ask her to jump onto this man’s shoulders, then climb onto his head, the cat will obey.” The audience waited eagerly to see if it worked. When the magician waved his wand and muttered an incantation, the cat sat perfectly still and refused to budge. The magician seemed a bit ruffled and his face turned a bright red. “I will try it one more time.” With the wave of his wand, he ordered the cat to move.

The large black feline never took her eyes off Samej. She seemed entranced by his presence.

Annoyed that one of his spells didn’t work, the magician picked up the cat and shoved her into his arms. “Here, you can have it. She’s been a thorn in my side for years now. One day she listens and the next time she completely ignores me.” The man apologized to the audience and continued on quickly so as not to lose their interest.

Samej never stayed for the remainder of the show. He held the cat protectively in his arms. The moment they made contact, there was a bond between them. He couldn’t explain it. This feline, unknown to his previous owner, was no ordinary cat. This animal had special powers.

From that day on, the two of them were inseparable and did everything together. Samej knew that his days on earth were numbered. That is why he went to great lengths to find the perfect master to take his beloved pet. Samej gently stroked the cat again. His thoughts were not on the peace and tranquility of this place where he lived, but on the young lady, he would meet tomorrow. He was sending her on a dangerous quest and into unfamiliar territory. She had been successful before and with the same luck and determination, she would be again.

Samej grabbed the cat from underneath the belly and placed her onto the porch. He slowly rose to his feet and walked toward the entrance. “Come inside, Noissapmoc. It is time we get ready for bed.”

In this next great adventure, Leslie Burrows is sent on a mission to save the Enchanted Land from a powerful force that is threatening to destroy the universe. With the help of a warrior companion, a mysterious cat and a magical dagger, she must reach the black hole in time and save mankind. Can Leslie succeed in her quest, or will she face the perils of doom?

Passage of the Princess

The Princess of Peace.  Princess Cassandra Wellington is destined to fulfill a quest and lead her people...

Cassandra untied the rope and pushed the boat into the heavy current. Climbing into the vessel, she grabbed the paddles and maneuvered the boat into the darkness. The shouts of the Delmirths drew closer. They laughed and shouted something she didn’t understand.

She paddled hard and managed to get far enough away, certain they could never catch her except by air. Cassandra rowed with all her might and watched the angry Delmirths gather on the beach. They shouted obscenities at her. A dart sailed in her direction and pierced her upper arm. A cry of pain filled the air as she tried to pull the wretched thing from her skin. The sharp edge was deep and the blood made it slick. Cassandra gripped it tight and yanked it free. After a few good tugs, the dart let go, except for the end of the tip that was still trapped inside her arm. Blood oozed from the wound, its flow hindered only by the embedded tip.

It wasn’t until the moon shone through the clouds that she got a good look at the poisonous dart. Cassandra had used these darts to defeat many of her enemies. She knew in order to survive she needed medicine soon. There wasn’t much time, four hours at the most. With a deep breath, she forced herself to remain calm. If she panicked, the poison would work its way through her body that much sooner.

Through the shadows, Cassandra saw the apparent new leader shout orders to his army. She had visions of them pursuing her through the sky and braced herself for what was yet to come.

Picking up the paddles, she remained strong and concentrated on her mission, to find land as soon as possible. As the hour wore on, she felt herself weaken. Her arms wouldn’t cooperate. The strength left her body. She touched her sweaty forehead and closed her eyes to the consuming dizziness. The dark waves that lapped against the boat had made her seasick. Cassandra leaned over the side of the craft and retched. The world spun around faster. She tried to pick up the oars, determined to find land. The oars fell from her hands. She leaned back in her seat and held her head. The boat rocked unsteadily in the wind. Clouds obscured the moon and Cassandra found herself in total darkness.

A strong gust of wind blew across the lake. Cassandra screamed in terror as the boat rocked dangerously back and forth. She held on tight to the edges as the waves increased with force. From out of the darkness, the sound of dragon’s wings soared above her.

Thankful its sight was poor, she swallowed nervously and watched as the wind and waves grew stronger. Fearful of losing it, Cassandra placed her knapsack around her shoulders.

The dragons fought against the wind in their attempt to fly across the water, only to be pulled back by the forces of nature. Flashes of lightning appeared in the distance, accompanied by rolling thunder. Tiny droplets of rain fell. Within minutes, the storm intensified and the rain became a torrential downpour. The waves pitched the boat precariously.

A large wave came out of nowhere and headed straight for the boat. It hit head-on. The wooden craft flipped over. Cassandra struggled to the surface and gripped what she soon realized was the boat seat.

She felt along the length of the wooden boat, made her way to the edge and dipped under only long enough to surface. She held onto the overturned boat with all of her strength. Her arms tired and her head spun as the storm pounded around her. The vessel hit a rock and splintered. With the last remnant of her sanctuary disappearing below the surface, she gave up.

The Princess of Peace.

Through the clearing haze, Cassandra saw a looming beast. It stood within reach of her. As she inched closer, the locust waited to attack. In the distance, she heard the clashing of swords and knew a battle raged. She prayed that Keidon made it out of the desert alive. She swallowed nervously and held the sword out for protection. She had never seen anything this ugly before. The large yellow eyes studied her every move. Cassandra got into battle position and waited for the right opportunity to slay the creature. Without warning, the locust spread its long green wings and jumped.

Cassandra was caught off guard. Her sword fell from her hand and landed in the sand nearby. She screamed in fright as the beast trampled its weight on her. The locust had Cassandra pinned onto her back and used its mouth to nip at her. The sharp legs pierced through the material of her dress. It easily dominated its prey and sank its teeth into her neck.

Cassandra cried out in pain. Through her agony, she glanced over and noticed the handle of the sword within her reach. She strained to move closer. Unable to breathe properly, she felt as if she would suffocate. “The baby,” she gasped. Then without warning, the locust repositioned its body.

Cassandra quickly scurried over in the sand and grabbed the sword. With the blade held high, she plunged the sharp edge into its head. The locust retreated momentarily and let out a high-pitched squeal. Cassandra managed to sit upright and with careful aim threw the weapon directly at the beast. Her eyes widened in fright as it fell over in agony. A green slime oozed from the gash. She managed to rise to her feet and stagger over to the wounded creature. Clenching her teeth, she pulled the sword free and stabbed it again. When she was sure the enemy was dead, she wiped the tip of the blade clean and continued on her journey.

With the sandstorm diminished, Cassandra saw clearly the devastation the locusts had caused. Several soldiers lay dead along the path. As she neared the invisible sanctuary, she caught a glimpse of a battle still clearly in progress. Whisking her sword outward, she jogged along the ruins toward the war zone. From the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Mark Stye battling two locusts. He was truly losing the battle. The insects eyed him hungrily from either side.

The doctor glanced between the two, his stance ready for the unexpected. When Mark noticed her, he yelled something inaudible.

Cassandra approached and assisted him.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he shouted.

Cassandra didn’t have a chance to respond. She took a couple of stabs at the nearest locust, injuring its front leg. While the one locust focused its attention on Mark, she managed to dodge the oncoming pincers of the other. “Where is Keidon?”

Mark swung his weapon at a beast and caused fluid to leak from the wound. “I don’t know. I haven’t seen him,” he panted. “I think they’re further ahead.”

“You have to ask for help,” she cried. “The invisible wall is right behind us. Call Tara. Tell her you’ll marry her. Do it quickly, or we’ll die.”

“I feel her close to the wall,” Mark replied. “I know she’s waiting.”

“Then do it.”

The doctor avoided another near hit and ducked as a sharp leg swung at him. “I need to press my hand against the wall. It’s the only way to connect with her.”

“I’ll hold them off,” Cassandra gasped. “Hurry, I’m running out of energy.”

Mark nodded in agreement and moved the fight toward the invisible wall. He waited until he was pressed up against it and then fell to his knees. He pleaded in a loud voice with his hands against the barrier. “Please, Tara. I’ll marry you. I beg you to make this stop.”

Cassandra heard his cry. She struck one of the locusts with her blade, keeping it out of Mark’s reach. The other locust drew near and assisted its ally in the attack. They had her cornered, ready to strike. “I can’t hold them off.”

Mark raised his voice. “I’ll do anything for you. Please, spare us.”

Cassandra suddenly fell to the ground. The two locusts had jumped at the same time and struck her with their pincers. She cried out in pain. Unable to lift her blade in defense, she watched helplessly as the enemy tore through her tender flesh. I’m going to die. She closed her eyes in defeat. The last thing she heard before the world disappeared from sight was Mark pleading for their lives.

Love has a price.

On the night of his journey into manhood, Colton Falcon's destiny is revealed through his grandfather. He sees...

The brothers were reveling in their glory when Moki posed a question that weighed heavily on his mind. "Do you remember the legend that our father told us long ago?"

Achak studied the twinkling stars in the sky. "What part are you talking about?"

Moki leaned over on his elbow. "I'm talking about our special powers of the wolf spirit. I remember father telling us that whoever possesses it, can also lose that power someday. Did he ever tell you how?"

Achak nodded. "He told me the secret. Why do you ask?"

Moki sighed in the shadows and stretched out on the ground. "Because of that woman we met today. She has a strong power over you. I felt it."

"I do care about her, and I'm determined to free her from slavery at whatever cost."

"The Badlaw brothers will be the hardest to defeat. They have been causing havoc for years. If we want to destroy them, we might lose ourselves. Are you willing to do that for Cheyanne?"

There was a long silence. "Yes, I'm willing to do that for her. What about you?" Achak glanced at his brother in the shadows.

"If it will make you happy and bring her unending joy, then I'm willing."

"We will alter her life, you know that, right?"

Moki nodded. "I realize that, but I'm willing to do it. I've never felt that kind of bond with someone before. I wish I had…"

Achak reached over and grabbed his hand. "I'm happy you are willing to risk your life for this."

"Brothers stand behind each other, no matter what."

Achak smiled. He couldn't find a better friend if he searched the ends of the earth for one.

They talked long into the night and reminisced about their wild adventures.

"We had some good times, brother," Moki said.

"Our adventures will never end," Achak added. "They will continue on into the next life. Can youimagine that?"

Moki yawned. "I will think about it while I'm dreaming. Good night, brother."

Achak stared up at the twinkling stars and thought about the challenges of tomorrow. He had to keep his wits about him. The Badlaw brothers were the toughest, meanest gang that ever lived. “What did the sorcerer do to you?” she inquired.

He squeezed her hand. “Every month at the full moon, I turn into a ferocious beast for a night. When I wake in the morning, I don’t remember a thing.”

Leslie swallowed nervously. She looked up and noticed the moon peek out from behind a fluffy white cloud. “Is it full tonight?”

Peter shrugged his shoulders and waited anxiously. “I hope not. I don’t want our evening spoiled.”

They sat on the bench and watched the moon move slowly into full view.

 “Please, no,” he murmured.

Leslie prayed silently to herself. She didn’t want a perfectly romantic evening ruined either.

When the moon was completely revealed, they both let out a cry of distress.

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

His eyes enlarged and he clutched his chest. Peter fell to the ground in agony. “There is only one thing you can do,” he gasped.

“What’s that?” Leslie got up and slowly backed away.

“Enter the Spirited Forest…that is where the Tridiamond is hiding. It’s a diamond-shaped object made of wood. The magical stones are missing…” The sweat trickled down his brow.

“How do I find the stones?”

Peter rolled around in agony. He clutched at his throat and made high-pitched sounds like a wolf. He managed to meet her gaze one last time. “There are three quests you must complete…” He panted. “If you can successfully finish the challenges, then a gemstone will appear in the Tridiamond. When you have possession of all three, you will be strong enough to take on the sorcerer. If you can defeat him…” He clawed viciously at the ground. He let out a loud howl and his body slowly turned into a hairy black beast.

 “What happens?” she cried.

His voice deepened. “The spell will be broken and I’ll return to normal.”

Leslie watched in shock as his hands transformed into sharp claws. “How am I supposed to win the challenges? I don’t have any fighting skills or magical powers!”

“She will help you.” Peter glanced up and revealed a set of pointed fangs. His eyes turned a hideous yellow and his body changed into a wild animal. A large bushy tail swished briskly back and forth.

“Who will help me?”

“Run away!” he warned. “I’m not human anymore!” He let out a low growl.

Leslie Burrows, a young woman impoverished and living in a small cottage with her mother, is delighted when she attends her first royal ball and meets Prince Peter, the man of her dreams. But the prince has a nasty secret and desperately needs her help. Leslie must complete a quest and defeat a wicked sorcerer to break the spell bestowed upon her beloved. She decides to risk her life and face the dangers that linger in the Spirited Forest. Can love conquer all, or will evil prevail?

When Christine Monroe finds herself unemployed and homeless, she turns to a life on the street. One night as Chris...

She eagerly grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the sweet shop. "Can I buy a lollipop?"

He opened the door and the overhead bell sounded. "Of course, honey." He purchased a few goodies for his staff and bought Sally a handful of her favorite flavored lollipops. Kent opened up his wallet and handed the owner a wad of bills. Clutching the brown paper bag of purchases, they went to the nearest Italian diner. Sitting in a corner booth, he listened to his daughter chatter happily about the upcoming holidays. "Eat your spaghetti," he urged.

Sally twirled a long strand around her fork and slurped it up.

"Honey, what would you like for Christmas this year?"

Her eyes enlarged. She wiped her chin with a napkin and shrugged her shoulders. "There is only one thing I want for Christmas."

"What's that?"

Sally reached for a dinner roll and bit into it. She chewed thoughtfully. "I can't tell you."

Kent leaned forward with interest. "Why can't you tell me?"

"If I tell you, my wish might not come true."

"I see…" He glanced out the window and noticed large snowflakes fall. His eyes took in a slender form as it walked by. A woman dressed in a long overcoat stood outside the restaurant and gazed up at the neon sign. He saw her hesitate, glance down the street, then enter the building. He half-listened to his daughter prattle on happily. He strained to hear the woman speak.

She brushed the snow from her long, black hair and nervously cleared her throat. The words she spoke to the manager were barely above a whisper. "Are you hiring?"

The burly man scrutinized her appearance. He shook his head, disgusted. "You don't look like a proper waitress," he said.

"I'm a real hard worker," she replied. "Please…I have experience." She handed the man a ratty piece of paper.

The owner glanced briefly at her credentials. "Are you going to eat here? If not, get out." He pointed a finger at the doorway.

Kent excused himself from his daughter and approached the woman. "I couldn't help overhearing…" He gazed into her brown eyes and was speechless for a moment. "I'm…I was wondering if you would like to join us for lunch." He motioned to his daughter sitting in the corner booth.

"No thank you. I don't eat with strangers."

"My name is Kent Peterson, and you are?"

The woman looked down at her scruffy shoes. "I'm Christine Monroe."

He held out a hand to shake. "It's nice to meet your acquaintance. If you don't mind, I would like it if you took a seat."

She shook her head and moved toward the door. "I really should go."

Kent knew he wouldn't convince her. He left her side for a moment and rushed over to his table. Grabbing a couple of warm rolls, he handed them to her. "I want you to take these."

Christine eyed the rolls. She reached out and took the food. Meeting his gaze one last time, she thanked him and exited the restaurant.

Kent approached his table and sat down.

"Who was that, Daddy?"

"I don't know."

"She is pretty," Sally said.

"She sure is," he agreed. He glanced out the window and watched Christine walk across the street. He was enthralled by her beauty. Not taking his gaze off her slender form, he saw her bite into a warm roll. She closed her eyes to savor the taste.

Suddenly, a group of men came out of the alley. The street thugs had her blocked off. One guy punched her arm.

"What are they doing, Daddy?" Sally inquired.

Kent sat rooted to the spot, his eyes enlarged with fear. A couple of guys attempted to grab the bread from Christine. When she refused to give up her meal, a man slugged her hard in the face. She crumpled to the ground. The bread was confiscated by the thugs. The five guys took off down the back alley and disappeared from sight.

When Christine Monroe finds herself unemployed and homeless, she turns to a life on the street. One night as Christine is looking up at the night sky, she prays for a family and a better life. Kent Peterson, a successful doctor, has recently lost his wife and is raising his little daughter, Sally, on his own. That same night, Sally prays for a new mommy to complete their family. Soon their two worlds collide and a relationship unfolds. Will their prayers for a happy family be answered in time for Christmas? Only time will tell.

Mae quickly placed her foot on the gas, revving the engine. The car made a slow getaway with some aliens still clinging to the roof. Her flat tire made the escape unsuccessful. She honked the horn, hoping the loud noise would scare them away. A few more dropped from view and howled in agony. This made her load lighter. The car picked up speed. She honked again and heard the curses from above. A couple more dropped onto the road. She heard one more move around up there. She swerved the car back and forth on the narrow road, trying to lose it. Mae let out a terrified scream as a green head suddenly blocked her windshield.

“I want to drink your blood,” it said.

Mae drove a little faster, determined to lose the creature. She swerved back and forth. The dirt created a brown cloud in her wake. She gave the steering wheel one quick turn. The vehicle spun around in a vicious circle several times before rolling into the ditch.

She tried to move her body. Everything seemed to be okay. Stay calm. Someone will rescue you. The seat belt cut into her chest. The pressure made it difficult to breathe. Mae felt a trickle of blood run down her face. You’ll be okay. She saw the green alien a few feet away.

Mae managed to unbuckle her seat belt. Her hand fumbled for the door. She gritted her teeth and tried to push it open. The door was jammed. Damn! Mae tasted sweat in her mouth. She pushed her entire body against the door and banged against it repeatedly. The door finally swung open and fell off its hinges. She tumbled into the high grass. Her head was swimming. Mae wiped the blood and sweat out of her eyes. Slowly, she walked away from the wreckage. Her entire body throbbed in pain. She stumbled and tried to regain her strength. There was no sign of the angry mob. Maybe they went back to town.

The dead alien lay stretched out in the ditch. Its yellow eyes stared off into space. Feeling relief about this, Mae took to the road by foot. She needed to go home. Looking behind her one last time, her eyes widened with fright. The alien that had been lying dead in the ditch was gone!

What if an alien race could invade our world through means of a video game?

The crisis originates when an unknown object crashes into the Wendell’s Game Factory. An invasion unknown to humans begins. After Mae Riley purchases the game Alien’s Revenge for her sons Mike and Ian, corruption takes place on the farm.

The Fate of Destiny

It was dark by the time she reached the rickety old bridge. Even in the gloom, it didn’t appear threatening. Destiny stopped short, not certain whether to tread with caution or wait until morning. She looked back into the night. Nobody followed. Chase had probably left long ago, his mission unsuccessful.

She was hungry and tired. Destiny searched in the dark for a place to sleep. She found an old log covered in moss and foliage. That would have to do. She leaned her body against the softness of the shrubbery, eager to close her eyes. A light glimmered toward the sky and radiated before her. Destiny bolted upright and followed the eerie glow.

She leaned over to try and find the source of this light. Out of the darkness, she spotted it. Twenty feet below in the water’s murky depths, a green light shone to the surface. What created such a spectacular sight? The palm of her hand throbbed. She placed her sweaty hand on the rail of the bridge and took a hard swallow. With an unsteady foot, she placed her weight onto the bridge.  First step: nothing happened. She gulped and took another step, and then another. Her palm continued to throb.

Destiny was partway across the bridge, and held tight to the rail. The water thrashed down below. She leaned over the rail to catch a glimpse. A slithering mass of crocodiles lurked on the surface of the water. Their mouths gaped open. Destiny told herself not to look down, and dared to take another step. Each one took her closer to the embankment on the other side of the bridge.

Out of the darkness, she heard a crackle. It sounded close. She turned, but saw nothing. She took another step and heard it again. Too close! Destiny ran as fast as she could. The bridge cracked along the way. She saw the embankment loom closer; a few more steps and she would be safe. Her palm throbbed even more, and the pain intensified. She had to release the rail. As her hand let go, a plank beneath her feet broke apart. Destiny screamed and plummeted into the cold, dark water. The hungry crocodiles waited anxiously.

Destiny hit the water hard. The water was dark and murky with only the green radiance to lead the way. Mesmerized by the shiny light, she knew she had to reach it. The light drew her in. Destiny swam quickly, aware of the hungry crocodiles close by. The monsters closed in, baring their razor-sharp teeth. She had to reach the light; it would save her.

One hideous beast opened its jaws wide and caught her foot in its hungry mouth. Its teeth snagged her flesh. The pain in her leg surged. Destiny had to focus, the light was within her grasp; a few more strokes and she would be upon it. Destiny reached out her hand. The pain was excruciating. Then it happened; she touched the light. A jolt she had never felt before shot through her. The water bubbled like a sizzling hot cauldron.

Every underwater creature within a mile radius shot up through the air, fell back, and floated dead on the surface. The crocodile let go of its grip and spun lifeless to the top.

Destiny reached into the heart of the light and picked up a shiny green rock.

Her hand burned more than ever. A vision of her mother appeared and called her name. It was comforting and peaceful. Suddenly the vision vanished, and another one appeared, darker and foreboding. Black faceless beings drew nearer. She felt drained and helpless, bobbing on the water’s flow, certain she would die. Her eyes closed tight.

Out of the darkness, she felt another presence pull her in. It wrapped her body in blankets and spoke softly into her ear. She heard the voice from somewhere far away, and then she heard no more.

The fate of destiny hangs in the balance.
Destiny Blake discovers as a young woman that she is destined to complete a quest and save the world from the ruthless hands of an evil ruler.
