Will fiery Mariah accept Woodward's matchmaking attempt?

Mariah Eccles, Lauren Pennington and Russell Banks all have one thing in common: they all work at a firm called Diamonds Are Forever, where diamonds and high finance are the order of the day -- millions of dollars are exchanged in the blink of an eye as easily as at the corner convenience store. The three of them also have a boss in common, a man named Roger Woodward, who is something of romantic -- and one hell of a matchmaker. But will fiery, independent Mariah accept Woodward's matchmaking attempt? Or be able to control her emotions that she keeps so carefully under wraps? More importantly, will shy Russell be able to? And will Lauren Pennington ever find happiness?

The people in the office would never have recognized Mariah as she walked across the wet parking lot and into the restaurant, although someone would have to know her well to be able to see the difference.

But that was the whole point.

She looked entirely different from the decidedly cool persona she deliberately cultivated at work, even though she was still wearing the same outfit, her hair still in a bun. Her whole manner was different, even though she would never admit it.

She knew what they called her at the office--The Ice Princess. And that was one of the nicer terms they used. But she wanted it that way. Liked it that way.

Like Russell, Mariah preferred to work alone, but for a completely different reason--if a job ever went bad, she would have only herself to blame. But transactions of this type never went bad. The security was too good. Nobody would play footloose and fancy-free with that much diamonds.

At least, not if they wanted to keep their job, she thought with a tight smile.

Teamwork was a foreign concept to her, though, and she preferred to go it alone rather than add more uncertainty by having to count on another person to help her get the job done. Mariah didn’t like to be vulnerable, in both her personal and professional life.

And trusting another person made her vulnerable. She’d spent far too much time being vulnerable to someone else in her personal life, until recently. So she threw herself into her professional life. Diamonds were a girl’s best friend, she decided. She took solace in the predictability of diamonds, the pace of her work schedule, and kept herself at a professional distance from all her co-workers.

However, the very idea of being the future Mrs. Mariah Banks both pleased and terrified her. That it was all pretend didn’t make any difference. That surprised her. She didn’t like to mix her professional life with her personal life.

Unfortunately, there was something she liked about Russell Banks, although she would never admit that, either. Like it or not, however, this job was what they had in common, and even though she hadn’t wanted to meet him outside work, it was natural to want to discuss it with someone.

But one thing was for certain--that commonality was why she was meeting him here in the first place. Why she was trusting him--even worse, liking him. Mariah Eccles told herself firmly that this ‘relationship’ of theirs would go no further than just being friends. Intimacy was not required to make them look like an engaged couple on an overnight stay.

She walked into the place and saw Russell standing by the bar, and looking very handsome.
