A young werewolf must learn how to lead his Pack without sacrificing his love for a vampire.

Caleb Joelson is a young man on the brink of adolescence who discovers a world he never knew existed: that of the werewolf.  As he struggles to come to terms with his new abilities, he grows and matures into the Pack leader position he never asked for. He finds himself disillusioned with the expectations of his Pack and his two on-and-off girlfriends, when one day he meets the most beautiful and interesting person he's ever seen before - an eight-hundred-year-old vampire by the name of Gabriel. Sparks fly, and Caleb's sexuality begins to bloom, pushing him head over heels in love with the world-wise Gabriel. Can he keep his new love secret from his Pack, or will they force him to choose between the life he's always known and the life he could have with Gabriel?

The night was cold, a harsh wind was blowing, and distant thunder was rolling. Rain was coming. An old house, identical to others on its block save for the color of the paint, stood in the middle of the street, taking the weather as it had done so many times before. Alone, a man sat inside the house reading a good book. He was listening idly to the weather report about strong gales, heavy rains, hailstones and whatever else.

Car headlights shone through the front window, distracting him from his book. He was not expecting any visitors, especially not so late at night. He vaguely wondered if someone had gotten lost and was just turning around, but no such luck. Someone got out of the car and rummaged around in the back seat for a few minutes. It was too far away to tell who or what it was, but he was uneasy.

The person finally picked up a fairly large and misshapen package from the backseat, just as the first drops of rain began to pour. The person brought it up to his front door and rang the doorbell, two, three, four times, loud and obnoxious.

“Ray?” called a woman’s voice. “It’s Anna. Please, open up, it’s important!”

Ray’s unease turned to shock and surprise. He had not seen his sister-in-law in months, maybe years, and thought the woman could have called first, especially if she was going to show up in the middle of the night like a vagrant. He opened the door to find her standing with a fairly large car seat, in which was sleeping his three-year-old nephew Caleb. The boy had grown so much since the last time Ray had seen him. Gone were the baby cheeks and dimples. Now he was beginning to show his own traits, sandy brown hair and a rounded nose.

“What’s going on, Anna?” said Ray. “Not that it’s not nice to see you, but, ah…did your phone get disconnected again?”

“There wasn’t any time to call,” she answered, hurriedly. “I had to do something quick. And I needed to make sure I wasn’t followed.” She rushed by him, nearly knocking him over with the car seat, and slammed the door.

Ray didn’t understand. Anna was normally a cheerful, respectable girl, sweet and smiling. This new version of her, paranoid and frantic, was completely out of character.

“Anna— “started Ray, but Anna ignored him, locking his door and drawing his blinds. Once she was satisfied that—whatever she was satisfied with—she turned to him, her eyes suddenly glistening.

“Ray, I wouldn’t ask this of you if I had a choice. But I don’t. They…they found us. They found us and now Marc’s dead and they’re coming. I have to hide Caleb. You have to take him.”

“Marc’s WHAT?” gasped Ray. His baby brother, dead? How? Who were they? What was going on? His head was spinning.

“Please, Ray!” sobbed Anna. “I don’t have time! If they find Caleb, they’ll kill him! They’ll make me watch like…like they did with Marc! This is just a game to them. They let me go just so they could hunt me again!”

“Anna, you’re not making any sense! What happened? How can Marc be dead? I just talked to him…just…” Admittedly, it had been a while, but that didn’t matter. All that mattered was that his brother, his Marc, was gone, and Anna was babbling about some game or something and not telling him a damn thing.

“Ray, please!” Anna was almost hysterical, and the storm outside was beginning to pound. “They don’t know about him! You have to promise me that you won’t let them come after him!”

Ray was dumbstruck. “Anna, I…please, what’s going on?” he pleaded, his eyes searching for some sort of hint, a clue, anything that would tell him that this was all just a sick joke, but there was only pain and misery etched on her face.

“I’ll tell you. One day. But not—not today. You have to take Caleb. You have to take him and get him out of here and hide him. They’ll find me, eventually. They know my scent. But Caleb…Caleb’s all I have left. Please. Please, Ray,” she said, her voice nearly a whisper, quavering.

Ray was silent for a moment. Then he slumped his shoulders, sighed, and nodded. He could not turn his back on his brother’s family, no matter how long it had been.

“Thank you,” said Anna, her voice breaking. She pulled him into a hug, which Ray returned, awkwardly. There was something hard in her coat pressing back against him.

“Oh, I almost forgot. Here.” She reached into her coat and pulled out the offending object, a thick manila envelope. “Don’t open it until after I’m gone, okay?”

“Anna, what’s in—”

“Just trust me. Okay? I have to go.”

She knelt next to Caleb’s car seat, where the little guy was still sleeping peacefully, oblivious to his surroundings. She kissed his forehead, tears streaming down her face, all sense of composure lost.

“Mommy loves you very much,” she whispered. One more kiss, and then she was gone into the pouring rain. Ray watched her car disappear into the tempestuous storm, then sat down and opened the envelope.

Inside were two enormous stacks of hundreds with bank wrappers around them, totaling over twenty thousand dollars. Ray’s head felt like it was about to explode. It was more money than he had ever held, or even seen at once. He would have to quit his job, move, and get fake papers. Working at an auto repair shop had put him in touch with a few people who could help. He looked over at Caleb, who was tossing and turning in his car seat, unaware that anything was wrong.
